Default Speedometer dont work...then works...then not again...help

Hey guys,

I did a search on here for speedometer problems and didn't find all that many helpful stuff...so here goes..

I have a 2002 500 H.O. and most times...when we start the quad and take off on a ride..the Speedometer is working....then after a while it just stops..the needle is at 0 and the odometer doesn't count the miles anymore... It will be like that the whole day...And the next time you start it up to go ride..the speedo will be workin' for a while..

I'm not saying it happens like this ALL the time...cuz the problem came up 2 rides ago...it happened like this twice.

Hope you can help

Thanks

Jeff

I'm not sure if this will help but I would pull the pod off and check all of your connections and make sure all the wires are connected securely.

It works...then doesn't....then works...then doesn't? I know exactly what the problem is.... You've been eating mushrooms again, haven't you?

Is the speedo electronic or does it have a cable coming off the transmission or the front differential? If its manual (cable) I suspect the gear that turns the cable binds when it gets hot or isn't meshing after you ride it for awhile.

Do you have a friend who has a Polaris you could borrow the hall effect sensor from the front wheel from? Sounds to me either the sensor has a short or that you have a capacitor that is bad in the speedometer. Only way to be sure is to first replace the sensor right front wheel has a single 3/8 bolt in it and four wire ties and depending upon how they ran the wire up the steering post usually about a three to five minute job to change. Do no forget to reinstall the metal cap from your old one onto the one you put on yours or if yours is gone get one to replace it. Other than that if the speedo remains powered and does not work then it has to be the speedo itself. Sad news is it is going to be expensive to check unless you have a friend who will let you borrow his sensor to check yours out with. Oh yeah you are going to need 4 wire ties as well three on the wire loom and one on the strut to change the hall effect sensor to keep the wire from getting torn away
