Default Scrambler 4x4 W/ low-range????

Is this a joke or has it been done? The tranny from an explorer will bolt up, is the word I heard. But what about the Scrambler being 4x4? How does that work? Are the Explorers 4x4, too????? If this is a reality, where/who has done it? It would make an already awesome machine even better.....Am I dreaming??????

There is a guy that rides a Scrambler at Windrock in Tennessee. He put a different trans in there to get low gear. He really liked the change. I wish I could tell you what trans works, but i didn't ask him. As far as the 4 wheel drive goes, here it is.

The 4 wheel drive selector button has to be on. When the rear tires are spinning 20% faster than the front tires, there are hubs in the front tires that are charged and lock, basically. When the tires are no longer spinning 20% faster they are not engaged. It doesn't have anything to do with the transmission.

Scott

You might be able to go to Windrock's site. They have a message board and you could post your question.

Right, i know how the 4x4 works. But, the power being transfered up front to spin the tires. It has to come from the transmission. And if the gearing is changed, it would have to change the gearing up front, too. See what i mean? I probly just confused myself, too. The 4WD tranny has to have an output shaft or something that operates the front. So, what I'm thinkn is if you put in a 2wd tranny from an explorer that was 2wd, you'd lose 4wd. Anybody follw me on this one?????

the 400 xplorer tranny will bolt right into the 500 scrambler frame. Just got done doing one. The 400 xplorer was a 4x4. The gear ratio's for high/ reverse are exactly the same in the 500 scrambler tranny and the 400 explorer tranny, it's just that the 400 exploer tranny has the low range in it.

That is awesome. Any special MacGyver-ing involved at all? Just the shifter for the low range? That might keep me from burning thru belts so stinkn fast. Any ideas on where I can find used Explorer trannys????? I'd give 'em my new scrambler one the factory put in 2 months ago. I split the other in half. They were nice enough to spend 6 weeks fixing it, (morons) and not fix all the things I asked them to. So, I did the rest myself and it's been running beautifully. I took 2nd place at the McKean Co. Harescramble in W. NY state. Scrambler all the way, baby!!!

It is pretty simple, they just bolt right in. Just be sure to get a CDS tranny, if your Scrammy has CDS, otherwise it won't fit right. Get the right one, and it will bolt right in.
You will also need the Xplorer shifter box, as the Scrammy has 1 linkage rod, and the Xplorer 2. There may or may not need to be a bracket made for the shifter box, depending on year, etc. Very easy to do, though, you can just weld an ear to the frame if needed, or even clamp a bracket on.

Great! I'm sold. One stupid question, though? What is CDS??? Haven't heard that one, yet. And where's a good place to look for an explorer tranny????

CDS mean Concentric Drive System, hard to find used trannys, may try ebay, local dealers may have something smashed up in the back that you can pull things from, i don't know of any site dealing strickly in used parts. If you end up buying new, depending on you dealer, about $1000.00. I get mine at dealer cost for about little under $900.00 i believe. If you have dealt with gear boxes or tannys in the past you may want to look at the possibility of just purchasing a new RH side of the gearcase(LH are the same) and just adding the low ranges gears, shaft, ect..., don't know if this is completely possilble but would definatley be cheaper than a whole new tranny. I just haven't had time to look into this. The high/reverse gearing is exactly the same. Besides modifing the airbox alittle and the new gear selector it is an easy swap.
