First Shot @ Trail Riding on YFZ...
#1
Took my YFZ out on the trails yesterday. Remember, I'm a motocross guy that bought a quad for the sand. Until yesterday I hadn't riden mine (only my wifes) on trails. This machine kicks *** and surprised me. It is impossible to ride like that on a motocross bike (2-wheel). There's no time/place for error - this machine gets through the bush like a rabbit.
Also note that I'm running about ~ 10hp less @ 4,500'. I can't imagine what this thing would be like @ sea level or close to it.
I was really working it at a particular area where there was a ditch then a berm, a jump and round again and through the ditch. Very technical coming up and out of the ditch with an immediate off-camber left-hander leading to the berm. One hell of a good time - and workout. The long sweeping turn after the jump was ***-end-out all the way - love it! Like I said, you can't do that on a bike.
Was taking the jump ~30'. I know not much for most of you, but not bad for a 37 year old man brand new to quads. I will say that jumping a quad is physically tougher than a bike. IMO. The flat landing didn't help any I'm sure. I'm going to get on a track w/ it in the near future. I know of one that will allow quads that's not far away.
BTW: I removed the coolant resi (if you didn't know) and have been continually watching for water coming out. I have yet to see a drop - and I've been riding very hard. The bike is now down to ~315lbs.

I agree 100% I have 5 words for this great bike " It is an honest machine" only rappy owners who are jealous will argue. The bike handles very good and is not top heavy, the bike is awesome through the hills and trails, I rode one hill on my rappy in 1st gear and would never imagine goin to second, this bike can do it in second goin to 3rd. Enough said.
Selector,
I am planning a trip to Sand Mountain soon, maybe we can hook up

I dont think it is a lack of torque. I thin its just because the Rappy's gears are tall. You just have to go faster.

Remembe the Rappy is over geared, especially the '01. Drop to a 12T countershaft sprocket and try it again. Huge difference, not to belittle the YFZ any. I'd also throw in the Rappy is especially sensitive to proper jetting for HP. It can run fine but not make the power it should.
