Default Reverse Limiter

I know there is a reverse limiter on the Raptors, right? but what is the limit? I was down at Coos Bay playin in the sand, and a couple times I had to put in reverse for one reason or anther. Anyway, everytime I did, it would spit and sputter, and a few times it died. It acted very similar to when the P-Brake is on and you try to go above an idle. This bike is brand new, I have had it for less than two weeks. I don't have paddles yet, so I was still runnin on the stock knobbies. The only thing that I have messed with on the bike, is I took the baffle out of the stock muffler, other than that, the bike is unmodified. Any thoughts on why it would act the way it did? Is that normal, or should I have it checked out.

Thanks in advance for any and all info.

That is perfectlt normal. '02 and later Raptors have a reverse limiter that is set at 2k rpms, yeah I know it sucks. There are a few companies that sell by-pass kits that do away with the annoying limiter but some of them also disable the revers light in the process.

ok, well at least I now have the peace of mind that my bike is functioning properly. I don't like using reverse so I doubt I will invest in a by-pass kit. (I am still weary about the problems the '01s had) I would rather get off and man handle it. It's more fun that way too. Thanks for your info yamamayzf1000r.

If you do want to eliminate the reverse rev limiter, don't buy any kits. Just ground out the white with green stripe wire going to the CDI, however it does eliminate the reverse light also.

I bought a reverse limiter bypass from Ripper Racing, $25.00, great instructions, hooked it up, works great and I still have my reverse light. Well worth the money for the light to come on, of course it just depends on what your'e budget's like.

How does it compare to the stock way than putting the by pass on it. Does it go slower or easier to put in rev?

The bypass I purchased mounts on the handlebar right next to the thumb throttle, extremely nice looking, put your quad in first gear, push the reverse lever with your thumb, foward just like your throttle, downshift once to reverse. It's just like the stock **** but you don't have to bend down and turn the ****. Best cheap investment I've made, simple, this is what Yamaha needs to do with the stock setup.
