Flecks on my porcelain - NOT GOOD!!!
#1
On Sunday, I pushed my Raptor harder than I've ever ran it. I raced Budds Creek MX with lots of long steep hills pinned in 3rd. I have FCRs and ran 145/148 with needles on the 2nd groove. Temps have dropped almost 20 degrees around here so on Saturday, I did plug chops on flat ground and found that 142/148 left no color on the base ring. 145 was the largest jet I had on hand so I threw it in there and hoped for the best. The quad ran like a top (god I love that low end with the FCRs:-) but I noticed a little stumble at the very top end while I was attacking those hills.
When I got home, I pulled the plug and saw some flecks on the porcelain and the base ring is bone white. Trinity's website recommends 143/143 for their 686 and FCRs, Sparks recommends 142/148 for theirs.
I'm running straight VP C12 (112 motor octane) in a 12:1 with Hotcams Stage 2 and Craycraft porting and coating.
I ordered every Keihin jet up to 165, they should be here Thursday.
I don't want to melt my piston!! Any ideas?

There is a picture of the plug, sorry if it's a little blurry my digital camera isn't that great at macro shots.
I did 2 plug chops on Saturday, both holding WFO in 2nd gear for about 15 seconds and then pulling the clutch and turning off the RUN switch. I don't have a long straight in the neighborhood. The first time, I used the original plug and the 2nd time I used a new plug. Both times I ran 142/148 and didn't notice any blubber or stumble at the top end but the white ash scared me so I threw the 145 in there for Sunday's race. I did not have any flecks on the porcelain before Sunday's race. These are NGK DPR8-EA9s, same as stock Raptor. I use the bottom metal of the threads, not the porcelain, to determine jetting. The flecks are indeed black and there are more on one side than the other. The ground strap is discolored too far, almost 3/4 of its length instead of right at the bend.
I think you may be on to something with the plug heat range, I'll have to take back some of my slams:-)
