I need a step by step on How to tighten my chain on my 4x4 scrambler 400 1995. And how do i test to see if it is to tight or not tight enough i need some tips and hints on how to tighten it, i know its loose b/c when i a gun it i can hear is skip a link. thanks alot.

 

I'm not sure on the 1995 but this is how I do it on my 2002.
1. Loosen the bolts that are holding the brake caliper assembley together. there chould be 2 of them.
2. Loosen the 2 remaing bolts that hold your rear end assembly to the axle. (fairly big Bolts)
3. Through the rear sprocket there should be a small slot big enough for a small punch, put the punch through the sprocket and into this slot. The slot is small so look hard, mine is located on the upper half towardds the back.
4. With the punch in the slot roll your quad forward to tichten the chain.
5. Re tighten all of you bolts and you will be good to go.
6. Lube that chain.

It souns like you have quite a bit of slack in your chain, I would inspect it and see if it is time to replace it.

If anybody has any other way to do the chain tension please feel free to share, my explaining skills are terrible.

 

That sounds good to me suds. The book says to torque the eccentric mounting bolts to 30 ft. lbs. without a hitch or 45 ft. lbs. with a hitch. The brake caliper mounting bolts should be torqued to 10-12 ft. lbs. I don't know how loose the chain should be since it is a nonconcentric. I hope this helps.

 

Also, you have a 3 chain machine. Be sure to tighten the middle chain before the front one. Same basic procedure as the rear.

well it only make the skiped noise when i gun it up a big hill and it may not do it everytime surly i don't need a new chain i only got like 50 miles on my bike

 

should i be able to adjust the chain myself or do i need to carry it to the polaris dealership

 

Do it just like Suds said to.

The bolts you have to loosen are the 'pinch' bolts around the axle bearing housing.

If you are unsure how to do it, be sure to ask the dealer if you can watch, as it is pretty straightforward once you see how it is done, and how to measure proper chain slack.
