I am about to take my Raptor engine to another level with upgrades by getting the head ported/polished, valve job, possibly bigger valves, & possibly slight overbore 12:1 piston (100.5mm or 101mm). My hesitation is over whether or not to use the 12:1 piston since some engine builders are advising to install a new Carillo rod if I use a 12:1 or higher compresion piston. Other engine builders don't think its necessary & one even uses a 13:1 with the stock rod. Some feel that the 686 bore(102mm) with 12:1 compression definitely requires the Carillo rod but if I stayed with a smaller bore I could still use the stock rod.

I would like to hear any/all opinions especially from those who run 12:1 or higher compression pistons with the stock rod & those who chose to use the Carillo rod either due to an engine failure or just felt it was a good insurance policy.

 

If you have the dough I would do it. Mine let go for whatever reason after putting together a 12:1 686. It's more of an insurance policy at this point. I wouldn't build one up again without a Carillo Rod. JMHO Many others prefer the stock rod for weight, but that can be offset in other areas.

 

Having a 2001 bike I'd do the ROD!!!!! I still feel alot of the rod problems come form the 2001 bikes, I don't know if its rod angle or what but I'd get the rod if I had a 2001.

The rod in my '02 twisted with just a 11:1 JE and Stage 1 HotCam!!!!!!!!!!!!![img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif[/img] Now I have a Carrillo in it and I don't have any worries!!!!!!![img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img] If you can afford it, do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

if you want spend a few more dollar then get the Carillo Ti-rod. They are running about $495. Or just get plain Carillo Rod
