Default Worst moment in my riding life...

Well, yesterday was definetly the worst day in my life as far as four wheeler riding goes.

After a awesome night Saturday, that saw me go undefeated and win the 660R Raptor class at Spencer, WV...we all went hill climbing Sunday morning. After a great afternoon of hill climbing, every decided to head back to the trucks to get ready to go on a long trail ride since the evening was shaping out nicely.

So as we came back to a old blacktop road a couple of us took off in the lead...a piped banshee was in front, then me, and then a built banshee behind me. We all took off in a race back to the truck. Well half way there we hit a long straight and get the bikes pegged up to around 60-65mph. When the worst thing that could have happened...happened. The guy in front, a great friend of mine has problems....

When we hit the straight I ran up to about 5ft off his bumper, and the built banshee behind me is running right behind me but to the side alittle. Well my friend in front comes off the straight in the lead but with me and my buddy on top of him. AS we come off the straight there was a minor turn to the left...and as we came to it my friend in front started cutting the handle bars but the tires never turned and he drove straight into the hill side at 60+mph. The sheer force at which he hit the hill side tossed him a good 30ft onto the road. The bike flipped twice and the rear tire landed on his left ankle. Definetly the scariest thing I have ever seen in my life.

The force at which he hit the hill was unbelievable.

My friend looked in bad shape, but it didn't take long before we has at the hospital and Health Net Chopper took him to Charleston from Spencer WV. He had minor road rash on his arm and knee, but his ankle was broken and he had a golf ball sized not on his forehead.

The problem....his left tie rod backed off the threads and simply fell out. Wasn't stripped and wasn't broke. It just unthreaded and fell out.

Just a sh*tty day all together. That's the only way I know to describe what I saw, and what happened yesterday. Something I will never forget.

He's got more luck then he will ever know.

If he could ever see the wreck from my view, he would defiently wonder how he is alive.

Wow is that scary....sounds like your friend was very lucky. I think I will check my tie rods twice before riding again. Congrats at the races!

Glad to hear he only sustained minor injuries. It sounds like it could have been MUCH worse.

Well, there is a lesson to be learned from this. Invest in some Locktight!! I use it on ALL important nuts and bolts. That way, this sort of thing won't happen, and I don't have to check and recheck all the nuts and bolts before each ride. The stuff is cheap, and as we have learned here, can save you from an accident.

I hope your friend is back on his quad soon. Give him our best.

i'd watch for internal injuries...I wrecked just as bad with all my gear on...30ft sounds about right. i walked with a cane for 6months and have never crapped the same again. lol. things can get moved around inside. Kidney belts are a good idea to keep your insides stable.

Doc says i may need surgery down the road to fix the play-doo-fun factory known as my ***. lol

I apologize in advance...my response may be disturbing to some...but these are the problems you risk when high speed riding comes to an abrupt end. and i don't regret a thing and would do it all again...in a sec without question.

Just as a follow up...here is the report on my buddy....

Crushed foot ankle on left side....
Broken bone below the knee on the left side....
bruised sternum and ribs....
broken left wrist and arm.....
bleeding behind the right eye....
minor swelling of the brain....

but he is breathing on his own, and when he wakes up he is cohearent and does know where he is at and who people are.

his first surgery is wenesday...and that's when they will start putting the pins and what not in his foot.

and this nightmare will haunt me for the rest of my life. definetly something I will never forget.
