Has anyone ever split a Raptor carb?
#1
I have two sets of carbs. One that doesn't function well and the other that is fine. The one that is fine the idle bolt/screw broke off inside the aluminum housing. Trying to remove it is a nightmare and the palm of my hand is killing me from so much drilling.
I was wondering if I split the carbs, remove the shaft in the middle that the throttle cable pulls to let vaccum in, and replace the housing. Has anyone ever split these carbs apart? Anything to watch for? I'm dying to ride this beast again.

Ward thanks for the advice. This has been the biggest ATV pain for me in my wrenching history. Tomorrow I will sit with some patience and see if I can get this apart.

No problem. I hated the Raptor carbs the first time I ever had to mess with them. I'm just happy I finaly got rid of the dang things.
I think its only about 6 screws and they will come apart. You will need either a vice or another person to hold them to loosen the screws, they're pretty snug. And be carefull with the vice. LOL

I don't have an expansive toolset yet.. but a vice was a must have for me. Did you have to remove the butterflies? Any other tips to watch out for? The better I am prepped the happier I'll be. I don't want this to end up as a nightmare.
What carb are you using now? I was considering the Edlebrock. I hear it's not good for a done up motor but all my crazy mods go to my DS. I just want a nice bottom end strong pulling reliable machine for woods riding and farting around.

No the butteflies stay in.
carb breakdown go there.
Screws #5 and 12 will have to come out. Parts #'ed 4, 7, 9, 10, and 11 will come out or off of the carbs when you are taking them apart.
It easier than that diagram makes it look. LOL Just don't lose anything and you'll be ok.
I am using a single 44mm Lectron now. I like it alot so far. I was scared with my mods that the Edlebrock would be too small. Plus I got this one already set-up for methanol and I like different. I have a couple pics on my page if you would like to see it.

Ward funny you mention that Lectron I have one for my DS650. The Raptor bascially I want to boost the bottom (I know it has plenty from the box) a bit more with a piston and possibly cam and that's it. All the crazy stuff goes towards my DS650.
Anyway I did remove the butterfly but I got the shaft out and I replaced the parts that were screwed on the carb. Lo and behold it took me all damn day but I finally got the carb going on my Raptor. However, now at WOT (not riding it of course) there is NASTY flame spewing out of the exhaust. Some say it's lean, others say it's too rich. I tried one near the top and one near the bottom on the needle clip position. I will dabble with it more next weekend. To make matters worse the one way bearing is pretty much shot. It doesn't want to start at all. Sigh.... I think riding is out this year. Hopefully next year all the frustation I'm going thru it will pay off.
