Raptor Tranny gone...need advice
#1
I've checked out ratortranny.com and i've got the engine pulled...scotts oil filter was filled with debri...worked as advertised. magnet had all kinds of metal and when i poured the oil out of the filter it looked like it had glitter in it from what the micr-mesh caught (ill post pics).
anyways 2nd is gone but the engine still feels strong. so i may just do a tranny upgrade. here;s where i need advice....do i just go with the 02 factory kit...or do i go with Fortin. what has been working out there.
also i'll be doing the work myself to save cash in hopes of adding an engine mod. what recommendations do you have for a mild engine mod. i'm trail riding and riding track. no dragging. just looking for more snap.
Suggestion please.

I definitely suggest the 2002 for track and trail, I find the ratios much better. going by the amount of fortin gearsets out there in use and the number of failures I have heard or read about I would think the advantage goes to 2002 yamaha for reliability.

Kuz, I upgraded my 01 before it went out for safty reasons. I would go to the 02 gears if $ allows you to. I have all my 01 stuff that I took out if ya need it . I was surprised how good they looked when I took it apart I was almost not sure weather to change it or not. I would buy a 11:1 piston for more low end grunt and you can run it on 91 octane fuel.

Thanks for the quick response dudes...you don't know how important that is to me. i am grateful. it s sounds like 02 is the way to go...what other work would i need to do if i changed the piston. i'm not a complete idiot. my experience is more related to cars and Boats. But i seem to finding myself fine around my quads. zi'm already piped and jetted with airbox mods, suspension blah blah. internally i'm stock.
as far as selling it...don't think so. when they 1st came out i was one of the first people to get my hands on one...it was nice to be dominating the trails and scaring the crap out of people on the track. it was a risk...1st year model in all. but it was fun as hell too. i'm not bitter...i just bust out the tools. i had the whole thing broke down in 3 hrs. engine out...swing arm off. packing up the Elkas and sending them back to Elka to have maintinance done during downtime.
hey it is, what it is. if i gain another 30-40 lbs i'll consider the Bomb. lol J/k

The stock bore piston would only require cyl deglazing and endgaping the rings. Every thing else is going to be replaced anyways, ie head gasket, base gasket ect... I would think of a stage I Hot Cam also. It's only another $130 tops.

Magnolia Yamaha sells the 02 upgrade for 3 bills and change. They're on ebay alot. The piston upgrade is what I would say to give you a bit more grunt. Alls needed is a good hone job on the cylinder and check the piston wall to cylinder wall clearances as well as ring end gap. A good machine shop or reputable dealer if you have one can do all that for you.

Sorry too hear about that.....many of us have been though it on the 01 tranny. I recommend the following:
1 get a maintenance manual
2 a flywheel puller
3 clean engine very good before tearing in
3 a table too lay everything out on that keeps you from bending over while working
4 large zip lock bags too place everything in and id them with permanent marker....you will thank yourself when you put it back together.
5 purchasing parts from magnolia tractor supply.....as of yet, no-one can beat their prices.
6 10.75/1 JE and stage 1 hotcam...for the price you cannot beat this combo....I bought mine direct for about $150 each, but better prices are available now
