Wolverine Valve Adj. Q

I just picked up a 97 Wolverine and wanted to set the valves. Does anybody know the spec and can give me a quick rundown on the procedure? If this was a small block Chevy I'd be in buisness 
Oh, how often should they be set and, if they were outa wack, would it cause low power and popping out the carb when it's really hot after a hard ride?

valve clearance intake .002"-.004" cold
exhaust .006"-.008" cold
these are the factory specs. You will have to gain access to the valve covers. I check my valves every 6 months. Hope this helps.

Take the front plastic off the machine. Then clean the area around the valve covers to ensure no dirt falls in when you remove the (allen bolts). Exhaust is in front, Intake in rear.
Set the engine @ TDC on comp. stroke by removing the little black plastic plug on the side on the case. Then remove the gray plastic plug on the side of the case that exposes the crank bolt. Use a rachet to turn the motor over. Line the "T" up with the line. Make sure it is the "T" and not the advance mark.
Remove the valve covers. Wiggle both rockers. There should be a little play in both. If not, rotate the motor 180 degrees. Next put the feeler between the stem and the rocker, and adjust accordingly. I like to set mine a little on the tight side. Engine must be cold as to allow for metal expansion when parts get hot.
As for the coughing through the carb, you may have a burnt intake valve.It seals ok when warm, but may leak a little when it gets hot. Just a thought. Just a note regarding the vavle covers: make sure the V molded on the inside of the covers are facing up when you install them. They are used to direct oil onto the stems.
