Default Where did I go wrong with jetting... Backfire through carb.

A few weeks ago, I took off the carb to try and install the Accel. pump... In the end, after massive complications, I said **** it and stuck without the pump.... At the same time I switched from a 40 to 35 pilot jet... The 35 is still in there. I also swapped throttle return springs... I now have the lighter spring..

Ever since.... I'm getting backfires through the carb (I actually feel a hit in my pants through the seat) when I try to turn it over to start it... It's not regular but it happens often... Only when I try to start the quad though. When it does backfire, it won't start right away (hot motor). You have to give the starter a push a few times. Most times when the motor is warm... It will start up fine on first crank like new... but sometimes it needs some turning....

I don't get it... Also when the quad hasn't been started in a few days... When I go to start it (without choke), I hit the starter and let it turn for like 2-3 seconds (I also pulse on the gas too if it doesn't start right away)... Then I let off the starter and try again... When it finally does start... It kinda sputters and the engine sounds like it's struggling... I keep on giving it a little gas for a few secs then it will run and idle on it's own... Also at first when it finally does start... I think I saw some black smoking puffing out of the exhaust when the motor was sputtering...

I think this means it's flooded...but why?? I even turn off fuel valve after every ride... Whats up??

Its lean on idle circuit. A rich idle circuit will start instantly when the engine is cold. Lean idle circuit always pops back through the carb when the engine is hot.

Thanks a million!!!!!

I had gone down on the pilot because I could not get my motor to bog or sputter when i turned out the Air screw... I guess that's another problem.

Thanks Erik!

So do I... Anyone want to trade an old TM45 for a 46HV ?

anyone running larger than a 35 pilot on those carbs is losing lowend due to be overrich. woods sets those carbs up with over rich pilot to bandaid the bog problem created from disabled accelerator pump. with the proper pilot (30-35, pilot air screw WILL show a peak) and the accelerator pump properly setup the lowend is incredible, twice the power & response as without, becomes a wheelie monster.

check your intake valve clearance.

if the motor is lean on the pilot, you'll hear a sucking or gasping sound from the air filter. check air screw adjustment.

i think the carb is a hassle to get right and keep right.
