Where did I go wrong with jetting... Backfire through carb.

You guy shouldn't believe every thing you read.
I can set the tm45 up with out the pump and no bog and no loss of power. (Ask MrHorsepower how it ran on the dyno)
The pilot is just that. Its off idle to 1/8 throttle. No performance in this range unless you idle around or sit in the garage? The carb needs between a 40 and 45 pilot to run and idle with out a back fire or bog off the start. This big of carb needs to be a little rich because its a manual . Its like fuel injection. Large holes need fuel to over come the loss of low speed vacuum.
I lectron is a great carb but not every body is a great tuner like Mr horsepower. He is the best I know of,and I know a lot of people.

OK, back to this pilot thing......I just recently activated my pump on my 45 and also dropped down to a 40 pilot from a 42.5 thinking I need to lean her out on the bottom end due to the big squirt of fuel dumped by the pump. The way I have always tuned a pilot was to back out on the airscrew untill she pops upon deceleration, then 1/4 - 1/2 turn back in. I can't seem to get my DS to pop with this 40 pilot even with like 3-4 turns out, y'all think I need to go even leaner on the pilot? I'm also running a 145 main with a 97 (leanest available) needle with the clip all the way at the top. Doesn't this seem a little lean? The exhaust tip is saturated with carbon after an hour ride telling me she's actually fat. A little help please........

Put the clip back in the middle. Drop your pilot down to a 37.5 And put in 142.5 main jet. I think you will see some great improvements. According to Mikuni we are running way to fat of pilots in these bikes. Hillbilly you have to remember that with more cylinder volume the more vacuum you create so you are going to suck more fuel thru you carb, hence going down a a couple of sizes in jetting.

I know what I'm talking about! I spent weeks working on the 42 and 45 carb with air fuel monitor and all.
Proof - stock DS, except pipe and carb. Gearing 17/38, 22" tires. 3rd gear take off. wheelie for 100 feet.
