Anyone going to the Hatfield/McCoy Trailfest?

Is there anyone out there planning on going to the Hatfield/McCoy Trailfest in Gilbert, WV? It is next weekend, 10/10 thru 10/13. I'll be there with my SP600 along with my buddy and his Grizzly 660. We've never been there before, but we can't wait!

Yep, will take both my ATVs. Will start with the V-Force but will also take the Grizzly out on at least one of the days. Never been there before? You are in for a treat. This will be my 6th trip down (over a period of a couple of years). I have a group of three going down on the 9th and 2 more coming down on the 10th. I hope you have lodging accommodations as I’ll bet everything close will sell out if they haven’t already…

Hey 2TV,
Yeah we secured a camp site a Twin Hollow Campground about 3 months ago. We're leaving early Thursday morning and coming back on Tues. (I want to enter the tug of war on Monday) You're in Frederick? I'm only about a half hour from you. Where do you all ride?

Well, I have a 90 acre farm to play with so any time I feel like a quick ride I just do it there. When I want a little more I have friends in the Thurmont MD area where there’s a few miles of trails. Sometimes we haul them to the riding areas in the George Washington National Forest (northern VA).
There’s a place called “The Cove” that has about 3000 acres (a lot of rock) that charges a daily fee ($20) for riding near Gore, VA. I got in for a discount because I was involved in helping them map out trails. I haven’t been there in over a year though (too many other projects going on).
But the premier place so far has been Hatfield McCoy. I only wished I lived closer! Our group is allowing 2 days of transport time (a day to drive down and a day to drive back) and 4 days for trail riding for this trail fest event.
I’m interested in discovering new areas (heard about some in PA) but haven’t gotten around to checking them out yet. So far I haven’t found anything close that can compare to what even one of the Hatfield McCoy systems has to offer…

Hi 2TV,
I'm in Westminster and was looking into the Hatfield/McCoy trails. How long does it take you to get there? The website says 450 miles from Balto but with trailering was wondering how long of a trip. Thanks!

Hello Bytor. From Frederick I’d say we generally average about 7 hours which includes one stop to eat and a stop for gas. We’ve also found that the best route is to take I-70 to I_68 to I-79 to I-77 to Charleston WV to WV-119. I-70 to I-81 looks more tempting but that route took us an hour longer.
Because of the time it takes to prep, load, drive 7 hours, check-in, unload, prep for riding we always allocate 2 days for the road trip (down and back). To make the trip worth while you should dedicate at least 3 days for riding for a total of 5 days. To keep vacation hours down I always include a weekend in there somewhere.
Of all the places I’ve been so far (which actually isn’t many), nothing comes close to the quality of the Hatfield McCoy system. What makes it special is the ruggedness of the terrain in this part of WV, labeling, rating (according to difficulty), mapping of trails, miles and miles of trails (70 to 100 miles or more at each trail head) and the scenery. Also the local folk are very friendly. On every one of my trips I’ve run across people who were willing to point me to their favorite riding areas (not in the Hatfield McCoy system) as the trails managed by Hatfield McCoy are only a small fraction of where people ride down there. However so far I’ve declined their offers because I get plenty of enjoyment from just staying on the managed trails, plus the riding fees that I pay help to support the people and organization that made it happen.
