Default Egg on my face - Help!

I bought an '04 raptor about 4 months ago. I'm new to this sport - did a lot of homework. I was convinced this was the best machine at the time. I went out to the sand dunes (in Utah) a couple of weeks ago and I felt like I was riding a Polaris Trail Blazer compared to everyone out there. (Yes, I had paddle tires) Don't get me wrong, I love my machine. I had a blast; but I want more power and speed. I have a K and N filter - what else?
Someone mentioned a smaller sprocket - what kind and size? What will this do?
What kind of pipe would you recommend?
Is there anything else? I am stupid when it comes to this stuff. I don't want to do anything that will reduce the life of the machine. Please help if you can

I ride a built 686 and it makes a stock Raptor feel like a Blaster. First off buy a good pipe like a Sparks or Yoshimura and properly jet it. Next a 12tooth countershaft sprocket. Also what paddles do you have? A set of Skat trak haulers 8 paddle should be best for a stock raptor. Anyhow build that motor!! you'll be flippin impressed.

Default Egg on my face - Help!

If I go to a fairly large atv part store and tell them I want a Yoshimura or Sparks pipe for a raptor, are there multiple pipes to choose from for each brand or is there just 1 kind each? Also, same question for the sprocket - if I repeat what you say, will they ask me which kind? I know, I already told you I'm an idiot with this stuff. Thanks for your input.

Sparks only makes 1 pipe for the Raptor but Yoshimura makes 3 different kinds. The only difference from all the Yoshi pipes though are what they are made of, the performance is exatcally the same. The choices are Stainless steel, carbon fiber, and titanium (based on however much you want to spend). If your planning on just piping, jetting, and filter then I wouldn't get the Sparks because it works better with built engines but the Yoshi works great with a stock engine and pretty well with a built one too cause I'm using one. About the sprocket just ask for a 12 tooth for a Raptor and they will just sell you the brand of sprockets that they deal. Also if you have the extra money I would invest in a Dynojet kit and a Pro-Flow K&N filter kit. That will HELLA make a difference with performance, should add around 10 horsepower! The key is making sure you get it jetted right, thats always the difference in winning the race and losing whoever is tuned up better wins (with same mods). Good luck man!

Well what were you up against that made you feel so inferior? What kind of paddles? Your weight? A pipe and filter from what people say is a big diference. I went from stock to slightly modded and skipped the 1st step, I couldnt be more than happy. I would get the pipe rejet mod airbox a little and see how you do. Remember at the dunes there are alot of built bikes, don't expect a stock bike to be the best thing out there. Stock bikes are always conservitive

How much do you want to spend? The sand is an entirely different animal.

Dumont is right, theres always a lot of built bikes out at the dunes, the raptor is a good bike, most of the bikes that made you feel inferior probably were raptors, just with a lot of performance add-ons. with the right set up, your raptor could be one of the fastest, most powerful bikes out there.
