Thinkin' about trading my R for a 4 stroke
#1
I'm considering it. I hardly get to ride any more and I've slowed down alot. Don't get me wrong, I still love the R and I can still kick some serious a$$ on it, but to be honest, well, it beats the **** out of me. When I got the elkas up front I had them set up for MX, BIG mistake! And the arm yanking acceleration gets pretty tiring. If I did trade though, it would have to be something that was set up pretty darn nice for me to consider it, and I've always really liked the 'Dales. I guess I'm looking for either someone to tell me I'll regret it forever or a couple of nice offers.
What do you guys think?

IMHO, it would be a major Dumb a$$ attack! But that's just my opinion... and just like something else, everybody has one.
You can make the R be anything you want, soften the ride, big bore the motor so it's more gentle/powerful, wider arms, wider axle... it'll ride like a cadillac... and you'll still have way more '$ca-ching$ in your pocket than if you buy a thumper.
Not to mention, once it's gone, you can't just go out and get another one... not a good one anyway.

Sweeeeet R! Own a WTEC Eraser w/520 KTM engine and love it. Never owned a R but have always thought about getting one. WTEC is awesome but does cost some bucks but if U'd get one U would be sold on four strokes. Check my pictures, first two enlarge for better look.

That is a nice R. I would keep it and get something else later on or just keep riding the R if i couldnt afford it.
I miss all my past rides no matter how bad they beat me or my wallet up.

booger, stay with the R but update it to make it easier on your body.
I am 35 so I know what you mean by it beating the hell out of you. I think the problem comes from the all or nothing power band. After I dropped a 310 kit on my R it became increasingly difficult to hold on. Soon after, I developement tendonitis in my forearms just from holding on to the bars.
The solution I switched to a anti-vibe stem ( see you have one) and protaper bars. The problem went away. Now my arms are ok but the rest of me still get beat. So I recently changed domes on my head and tried out a high compression one. The power now comes on right off idle. With this set up I could almost putt around like a four stroke and take is easy.
This leads me to believe that the answer for older R riders would be to get a powervalve cylinder to soften the hit. I've never ridden one but I would imagine you could take it easy and not have to be on the gas all the time.
Also revalve the shocks for recreational riding.

Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions fella's. I'm real bad about wanting to jump to the next thing and keep trading, even if I do get burned. I just like something new every now and then. I went up to little sahara on labor day weekend and it was really choppy and the quad beat me up pretty bad. My buddy who has a 400ex that is VERY tricked out let me ride his a little and man was it smooooth. But I had to stop to realize that I had a pretty nice ex that I sold in order to build my R, and it was the best move I've ever made in this sport. It's just that I hardly get to ride at all now and when I do, I'm not in top form and a quad like the R can be pretty rough. I guess I need to revalve the shocks before I go making any stupid decisions.
Gile, the only thing I haven't wanted to in trade a time or to is the wife, but thanks for the compliment.
