Trail communications

what do you all use to communicate with each other on the trail? I looked at the helmet radios, but for 200 apiece, I think I can find something better.
I have a handful of FRS radios... I'm thinking about mounting a headphone/mic in my helmet and one in my wife's, so we can talk to each other
Has anyone tried this? Anyone have info on how to do this or tips?
as always, links and pics are a plus

well, the helmet communications systems are basically frs radios made for helmets (the 1-2 mile versions anyway)
I pondered your idea for a long time but I finally broke down and bought a 5 mile system from Chatterbox.
Depending on your frs radio versions, some have vox capability right on them... in this situation, you only need to put a hands free mike and earphone (like for a cell phone) in your ear and you are on your way. The problem with this is that they are typically too sensitive to the motor noise and try to transmit continuously. Some foam wrapped around the microphone will help, but you might end up yelling in your own helmet. It is definately worth a shot.
A disadvantage to using an frs radio is the cord hanging down from your helmet... if you clip the radio to your body, not too bad, but if you place it on the bike, if the two of you become seperated (you and the bike) ie getting off or getting thrown off, cord is the first to give.
Give it a go, what is the worst thing you could find out.. doesn't work?
Ride on.

thx for the reply!
I pretty much thought the same. What I did was found my earplug/mic and ran the earplug thru the liner. It's an earbud so it just sits there in the ear opening... not sure how well I will be able to hear on the bike. I ran the mic behind the foam on the chin part and put it in the opening for the breather in the front. Once again, just sitting there.
Luckily, the mic I have has a button on it and comes apart in 3 places. Now all I have to do is plug the cord from my radio into the cord on my helmet. I generally wear bipped overalls when riding, so I can put the radio in my front pocket. Not sure how the wife will hook her's up.

I found my wife wouldn't shut the hell up. Last thing you need coming into the corner at 80 is your wife yellin, "where are you at, slow down, I'm going to get lost, my tampon hurts, etc.
do yourself a favor, and stop for a break when you want to talk.
About the only thing they are good for is telling the guy at the head of your pack that there is another Arctic Cat zr900 (okay 250r as this is an ATV thread) comin up fast, so you better quit jabbering on the radio and get the hell out of the way.
