rear axle removal from swing arm 00 Xplorer
#1
Anyone out there have any tips on getting the rear axle out of the swing arm on a 2000 Xplorer 400? I've got the right side down as far as getting the sprocket off. Problem is I still need to get the sprocket locking hub assembly off, then she'll slide on out without a problem. I've got a shop manual on order but it's not doing me much good now, and my Polaris bud up the road is scratching his head on this one too.

Thanks for reply. I was looking at the microfische too, although yours is a better rendition. Pretty new to this work though, so am hoping someone has actually yanked that hub assembly for some insider tips. Thanks again.

You take the hubs off, rearsprocket off, take the chinch bolts ALL THE WAY out and just work the axle carrier out of the swing arm.

I should have worded this differently. My question is how do you get the right sprocket locking hub assembly off? I took off the snap ring, but don't know where to go from here without guessing and maybe wrecking the thing. Please advise.

I think maybe you answered my question and I didn't realize it. Are the chinch bolts the ones that go thru the two swing arm pieces that lock down the axle housing? If yes, I take it you won't screw up the swing arm by expanding the 2 swing arm lock down parts to get the housing back in with the sprocket hub assembly in place? I didn't do that yet because I thought I might mess up the swing arm.
Pretty new to this as you guessed. Thanks for advice.

One more related question. One of my buds was trying to help and he loosened up the disc brake thinking he could yank that off. He then yanked out the foam seal. Of course that didn't work. I have a feeling he just created more work for me. Can I get a new foam seal over the retainer nut on the left side and back in place on the outside of the disc brake or am into a whole new can of worms? Help!

You can pry the swingarm apart to slide the axle out, I did this not too long ago. I had to replace the swingarm. It's no big deal with the foam seal either. I messed my seal up not knowing how things came apart it's easy to replace. I'm no mechanic , as long as you got the part breakdown list or the service manual you can do it. I had to convince myself that "its only parts" I can do it. And I did, job done, it just took a little time.

Remove the wheel hub,Remove the snapring, remove the aluminum sleeve.Under that sleeve is a big nut, remove nut(might have to split it with a cold chisel)Sprocket hub will come off.Do the same to the other side(not sure what side it slides out on,been too long)Take a piece of wood and hammer and tap the end of the axle and it will come out.

I'm on a swing arm replacement too. Where'd your's break? I'm wondering if some models had a weak point. I ride it hard, and the terrain isn't easy, but no reason it should have broken where it did. I got it used, but still it shouldn't have mattered. Mine broke lower left- sheared off on top and below the axle housing. A couple days prior to the ride we had a tough time tightening the axle. We got it tight, and I came back with the problem once I rode, so I think she was already weak. At least I didn't leave the axle on the trail.
