Valve adjustments on srcambler 500
#1
Well i have had my scrambler 500 for about 6 months now and was wondering when do you have to adjust the valve clearence? My engine makes noise and i think it may be time to adjust.
Thanks for any replies

Mine does sometimes make a ticking sound at idle. It did it worse until I finally got the idle adjusted correctly.
Here is the the instructions
The engine must be cold and at top Dead center (TDC)
1. Remove the seat, front plastic, and gas tank
2. Remove the spark plug and plug the hole with a towel to prevent dirt from getting in there.
3. Remove rocker cover bolts, cover, and gasket
4. Remove timing inspection plug from recoil housing (located to the right of the recoil rope)
5. Rotate the engine with the recoil rope watching the valves open and close. It is very important to get the engine at TDC on the compression stroke. This is the hardest part.
6. Remove the camshaft sprocket cover on the right side of the engine
7. Watch the camshaft sprocket locating pin and slowly rotate the engine until locating pin is facing upward, directly in line with crankshaft to camshaft centerline. The camshaft lobes should be pointing downward.
8. Verify TDC by observing the "T" mark alighned with the pointer in the timing inspection hole. In this position there should be clearance on all valves. This is the hardest part to do. There are some pictures in the manual. I would send them to you but my scanner isn't working. I would highly recommend getting a service manual.
Now that you have accurate TDC on the compression stroke, now comes the valve adjustment
Intake valve
1. Insert a .006" feeler gauge between end of intake valve stem and clearence adjuster screw
2. Using a 10mm wrench and a screwdriver, loosen adjuster lock nut and turn adjusting screw until there is a slight drag on the feeler gauge
3. Hold adjuster screw and tighten adjuster lock nut securely
4. Re-check the valve clearence
5. Repeat adjustment procedure if necessary until clearance is correct with locknut secured
6. Repeat this step for the other intake valve on 4 valve models
Exhaust valve
1. The exhaust valves on the 500 share a common rocker arm, and must be adjusted using 2 feeler gauges
2. Insert .006" feeler gauges between end of exhaust valve stem and adjuster screws
3. Loosen locknuts and turn adjuster screws until there is a slight drag on feeler gauges. Both feeler gauges should remain inserted during adjustment
4. When clearance is correct, hold adjuster screw and tighten locknut securely
5. Recheck the valve clearance
6. Repeat adjustment procedure if necessary until clearance is correct with locknut secured
