EPI SPORT CLUTCH KIT/GOOD, BAD?
#1
I see ******* has the EPI sport clutch kit for 130 bucks. Anyone have any experience adding this to a stock '99 Sport? If so, what were the differences between EPI clutch and the stock setup, assuming everything else was left stock?

I put a EPI clutch kit on my 98 sport when it was about 2 month old. The engine was all stock. you will be happy with the kit it really brings lo and mid range to where it should of been to begin with. You also should check your belt deflection and try to keep it at 1 1/8" also measure your belt width, new is 1.188" and limit is 1.125" the wider the better. If you are going to pipe it later wait with clutch kit and buy one to match pipe, otherwise you will being buying it twice, the EPI is only for stock

I really couldn't say I know the kit for Sportsman is a different style, more for utilty use and not for speed, thats all I read in EPI catalog, mine were all sport models and now I have one for my 500 Scrambler but I don't want to put it on till we get back from Piute trail, for that I will clutch it for altitude and when I get back I will put in clutch kit when taking out other weights, sorry I coulded be more help

Maybe I shouldn't buy the EPI Sport Clutch Kit unless it is good for 3000-6000 feet. They told me stock jet size was 230 and to go to a 210, so I picked one up and took out the stock one, but it was also a 210, so not sure what's going on. Maybe it isn't the jetting when I ride an average of 4500 feet; maybe it's the clutch. I don't seem to have nearly that power as I do at low elevations. So maybe it's gonna take a different jet, K&N, airscrew adjustments, and a higher altitude clutch? Hope someone has some info on this.

Not knowing which year your sportsman is I picked a 98 and looked it up in my service manual and for 3000-6000 feet you should be using 10BH instead of 10MH weights with same color springs and position, that might help without buying a entire clutch kit, non bushed weights are about $6.00 to $9.00. Now for jetting If you have a 500 Sportsman the factory main jet is a 142.5 not a 230and at that alitude it should take a 130 main jet, thats are whats on every 500 Sportsman in my factory service manual, hope this helps out

Now I see you had a 99 Sport, I don't know where I came up with a Sportsman. Now you are right yours did come with a 230 and 210 is correct. Now you should replace your S55 weight in your primary clutch with a S weight and reset your driven spring from 2/2 to 2/1 setting. Thats good from 3000' to 6000' from 40 to 80 degrees and 80 and above you can go down to a 195 main. You should open air screw to 1.75 turn now thats factory specs. Now I know what to watch for so I replaced my pilot jet with a #30 my was always rich on lo end and run a 220 main down to 0 degrees at sea level, but I don't recommend doing this if you don't know what to watch, could get real expensive
