Reworking my 96 SHEE into a MXer---any opinions..
#1
I am in the process of reworking my 96 SHEE.... I have currently sent my motor off to CT racing for a complete reworking which consisted of their '370 Long Rod Kit'. I had Ol Allen install a cool head w/17cc domes, a MX Port, and went w/ his MX pipes and silencers, he also put all of the other lil knacks and so forth that goes along with the lil package... The motor should put out 60 horsepower, any more would be senseless i.e.-->would not be able to get traction coming out of corners. I am probably going with TCS suspension all the way around, I am not really sure yet though--I see alotta people going with Custom Axis.... Is there that big of a difference?? Is there many people in here that has ran both types of suspension? What about Elkas? Next question I have is concerning my airfilter......... I am in a state of UTTER CONFUSION about either running a K&N assembly w/outerwears, or a foam setup!! With a modified motor and all of the money I am dropping off into this project I want maximum performance, but also do not wanna trash my engine either.
If you run outerwears on your K&N w/o the box and only run for 2 or 3 hours a weekend and clean them after every ride (NO MUD or WATER) only MX at a track that is always nicely prepped, would the K&N sacrifice your reliability?? I take awesome care of my bike, I am not a slacker!!
Question #3) I am somewhat undecided on the A-arms, there are so many brands out there, I am probably going to go with Laeger (they seem to have the best reputation) but there are 3 configurations, wich are: +3, +2, and +2 up 1. My question is which is better? I am about 225 lbs., and running only MX---which one of these rae the best setup with the information being provided? This crap is so expensive, I only want to have to buy everything once, and only once, I do not desire to spend $2,000 on my handling components only to realize 6 months later that I should purchased a different configuration! Any help on this subject will be totally appreciated!!
My lil Bro has a 88 250R that I sold back in 92!! We are competing on who can (will) nhave the fastest bike!! He is about to order either a 265 P/V, or a 310 kit for the bad lil R, he has the handling tricked out for the most part w/Elkas and leager A-arms....
Another question, are the new 18X10X8 holeshots that much better than the slightly older 18X11X9 holeshots? If so how, or in what aspect?
Why am I spending a Sh!!!!t load of money on a shee?? I only wanna prove to all of the people around me that a SHEE can be made into an AWESOME MXer'.. Besides, I have always liked them, and you hardly ever see them at the track! I will have around 12G in my bike when the project is finally completed, so every ones educated opinion will be appreciated!, Thanx!
96 Shee with +4 dura blue, CT Long Rod 370, Cool Head w/17cc domes, CT MX pipes and silencers, holeshots, Twist throttle, handle bars w/CR 250 bend, and soon to be totally trick handling components!!
LONG LIVE 2 STROKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OH yeah, I also have V force reeds in her as well, does anyone know the correct jetting specs for this area so I do not have to purchase a ton of spark plugs when I go to jet her? Thanx for all of your help!!

I have MX'd my banshee in district3 NY for a few years...missed last season though...
-1 inch on the swingarm(I use lonestar round housing), +2+1 on the arms(lonestar)...suspension is all your choice...people may knock me..but I survived many jumps with works suspension.
I run a prodesign filter setup with a K&N..no lid on stock airbox w/filterskin.(No problems with reliability)
You are correct though...people tend not race the banshees on the MX tracks...mostly due to the huge power hit and somewhat lack of low end response. But once you learn to control those revs...the banshee is great on the track.
the best mod I did in my opinion was the minus 1 swingarm and forward arms...it changed the geometry of the bike in a good way...no more nose dives off of jumps....more agressive into and out of turns......all good
I'm not a big fan of huge motor mods...A bike like the banshee does not need it for MX...one tooth less on the front sprocket...I run FMF pipes.
While your into the motor , one thing I would recommend is getting rid of the plastic water pump impeller and changing it out to a prodesign metal impeller...I melted the plastic gear racing which led to a top end rebuild.
You will see great gains in braking with braided brake lines (no more fade due to line expansion)
BTW: My banshee is also a '96...and I always choose to race my banshee over my 400ex or raptor.

Say-it-FMF bout got it covered.
I believe -1 swingarm is enough for slick tracks. -1 is like going from stock tires to razrs.
The 370LR won't be a great power increase, but the porting+the longrod will make the powerband smoother where you can almost lug it in gear. I geared my 'shee up to a 15t sprocket b/c I needed that extra little bit in 2nd/3rd for jumps+it helped the wheelspin b4 I got the -2.5 arm (adjustable to -1 3/4 to 3 1/4 w/ the chain adjusters). I believe in chassis mods b4 motor mods.

Hmmmm, I do not know how everyone elses' SHEE performed, but after 1 ride at the track I bent my front shock and the engine was very stopped up!! I was like, "this sux!!!!" But I also knew that I had not rode in quite a while, so one day my brother bought his CR 125 over and we dragged a few times, he blew the SHEE away by like 4 or 5 links----->we raced till we were topped out, and it seemed like when he hit 3 rd gear or so he just walked away like he had NOS or something......... Well a few months later he bought a 250 R (it was a bike that I had sold back in 92!!!! Anyway, supposedly it is not ported or anything, basically a stock bike with a Paul Turner pipe, a 36mm Kehein Carb, and a RAD valve, and a milled head----- he blew the CR 125 away by like 2-1/2 - 3 links!!! So I knew that my motor had to go get reworked at this point to even be somewhat comparable with his R!! I have not fully completed my installation of my motor or anything because I work ALOT!!! So I do what I can do when I can do it!! I plan to have this project complete by mid-Feb..... I plan to do whatever I have to do to have a faster MX bike than him! He is sending his extra motor off for either a 265 P/V or either a 310, although he says that he would never need a 310, and a 265 is as big as he wants to go!
I only know that my bone stock motor sucked big time, for instance, you could go into a sweeper and if you went into it just right, your motor would sign off right in the middle! Go in a lil faster and a gear higher, and it would not have enough power to break the back tires loose!! I was sooo pissed off!! I was like man, this is like a stock 200 X or something!! LOL, seriously it was way underpowered!! I hope that the 370 LR cures my power problems!! Now I must get my handling up to par--by the way, with my work schedule and so forth, I do not plan to even ride this thing until my chasis is right along with my motor!!
So the -1 swingarm helps out that much??!!

The clutch is meant to be used...the motor will not sign off if you can control the revs.
Your race situation is a drag race? you will never hit top speed on a mx track....never... you will be making big bucks if you can. 90% of an MX race is the rider..bottom line. But I'm sure your ct kit will help a bit...It will make for a nice bike...just not my need right now.
It was just my opinion that " I am not big on huge motor mods " ...been doing this quad thing for quite some time now. Over the years...you learn what works and what does not.... It is mandatory that you ride the bike...not the bike rides you.
And yes...the -1 inch is a big difference..I was skeptical too..but it works.
Which ever way you decide to go...motor or no motor, I'm sure you will have a great time racing your banshee. Have fun and be safe. A banshee is a hard machine to tame on the track...and I will never claim to be the best at it...But I sure do have fun trying.

Say it FMF,
You stated that the 'clutch is meant to be used to control the revs', I am very well aware of this, 'you can (in my past experience) bump the ol clutch if your RPM's dropped to low thus the motor fell off of the old proverbial pipe'. BUT, all I was saying is there really was no powerband at all, the motor had the power characteristics of a 4 stroke!! I tried everything when I was at the track riding this bone stock thing!! This was a year ago by the way, since then I have pulled my motor out sent it to CT whom redid the whole thing---and I am not about to order my chasis setup.......... I had purchased the bike used a couple of years ago and have only ran maybe 3/4 of a tank of 105 race gas through it, maybe the motor was weak, all i know is that I have rode quite a few 2-strokes in the past and this was very upsetting to me so therefore I felt that my only option was sending it off to a major engine builder---I did my research and opted for Ol Allen Knowles...........
In the past, back in 86 or so, I rode one of the old 'Tiger 200's' The old trike--I was accustomed to riding a slightly modded 200x baxk then (I was only 14 and was riding 200 amateur and holeshot my very first moto)-I did not see that many of them. I rode this bike on a flat track and will never forget the temperamental powerband of that thing, yeah it would fly, but it flat wore me out.... It was the first 2 stroke I ever rode----ever since then I wanted to have a national caliber bike, and now I am slowly taking the steps to make this dream come true. I guess the morale of the story is, I have been around a long time as well ........

I was not knocking your abilities for sure...I'm sure you do just fine....You should build the bike that you feel fit for the job.... again..I'm sure you will enjoy it.
You know the main reason I have stopped going big with the motor mods? All the quads I have owned and still do....I have never ever gotten my money back out of them....I really enjoy the wrenching side of things...But logic IMO...tells me that buying a 6000 dollar quad...putting 4+ more thousand into it...beating the crap out of it at the track(as an amatuer)...try to resell it....You still get less than your purchase price....
I know , I know......I never plan on selling....well... that's my opinion. My new born and savings account are far more important right now...especially since I do just fine on the bikes I have.....My wife puts up with my hobbies...we both work hard for everything we own...but if I push my luck...I may be out of luck so to say.
She still questions why I need a drz400, banshee, 400ex and raptor sitting in the barn...well...my friends need to ride too!!! (plus she gets a kick out of being able to pick which bike she will ride around the property or on the trails)
But really...maybe it's just me... In the beginning, the banshee felt like a slug off the line and in low rpms...I was very afraid of toasting the clutch with constant slipping... But as my riding skills became stronger...I found the bike going faster and faster the more revs I handed it...the more it handed me....call me lucky I guess...but I have only changed pistons twice since '96....I do the rings every summer, need it or not. It has been a great quad...and I really do not baby it at all. At the moment, I'm not looking forward to changing the front wheel bearings...they are getting noisey...and always a bear to press out of there.

get a rappy or a 450!!!
If I woulda wanted a CRAPPY, I woulda bought a CRAPPY, I do not like 4-strokes and probably never will. I am sure the 450 is a nice bike and so forth, but, I do not buy into the media anymore.... EVERYTIME a bike comes out that is new and so forth, the MEDIA brags and brags about how awesome it is, then as time progresses they end up becoming a literal piece of junk... I am not saying that these bikes are any of the such, ALL I AM SAIYING is: The mighty twin 350 has been around since 87 with almost no changes---only minor changes like j-arms to A-arms, different bars, stuff that one chunks into the garbage can soon after the purchase anyway..... BUT the BANSHEE is still a quad that is still bought by many today, and yes it does possess its' dedicated followers, almost like a cult!! I plan to keep this quad and only drop $$$ money into it, as time progresses.......... I am sure with the mods, it will never ever be surpassed by a stock quad, nor will it ever be touched by very many of the so callled high tech new release quads...... I have been around this sport for a while, and remember back in 98 when the 400 EX came out and everyone said how it was the 250Rs replacement, now it is labeled as an outdated quad 'for the wife............ I am not dishing or anything, all I am saying is if I wanted a RAPPIE or a 450, I woulda bought a 4-stroke, but I am a loyal 2-stroke advocate... Everyone is different, and this is what makes the world go around... so my friend, you can keep your Rappie and be happy, and I will continue to mod my SHEE, perhaps we could meet at the track one day and drink a beer later, but till then ride safe....... Later
