500sp out of gas, now won't start
#1
2002 500 sp. Ran out of gas, switched to reserve but still wouldn't start. Added gas, still won't start. Good spark and I loosened the bottom cap on carb to confirm lots of gas to carb. Still won't start. Turns over but won't fire. Was running perfect before. Any ideas? Thank you.

Is it possible you didn't run out of gas at all and your quad quit due to some other failure? Sounds to me that it just might be possible the running out of gas is a "red herring" and casting a diversion from the real problem. Just thinking outside the box.

Traildog: I never thought of that, but I do believe I did run out of gas initially. Sputtered to a stop like it has before when i forgot to fill up. After switching to reserve and not getting results, I checked the gas tank from below and saw it was nearly empty.
I have fuel at the carb, spark at the plug, and compression seems fine. Should just fire up like aleays before.
Question: Does the carb require a certain fuel pressure from the pump, or just an adequate supply?
thanks again

From my experience when run out of gas and switch to reserve it takes a lot of cranking to get it going again. The job of the fuel pump is to fill the float bowl to the desired level. Pressure is not that important but requires enough to fill the float bowl and maintain adequate supply of fuel at all throttle openings.
Have you tried cranking it and at the same time squirt gas into the carb using a hypodermic. If it fires the problem is most likely fuel supply.

Check to see if your jets are plugged up. If you have fuel to the carb, spark, and compression then it sounds like something in the carb is messing up, possible some debris in the jets.

I had the floats stick on my raptor once. Cranked and cranked and would not start. Put some gas in a spray bottle take off the air filter cranh the engine and spray gas in it see if that does anything.

I’ve had a couple street bikes that were a real bear to get started in the spring. I would have to spray starting fluid directly into the carbs and crank it over for quite a while before it would start. Then they’d run like a top all year long. Every spring was the same ritual though.
