What month does a new model year start??
#1
Hey guys-
I'm back from a 5 month absense and am getting another DS650 within a couple weeks. It has been a LONG 5 months without an ATV! I'm looking at a DS that was built 07/2000 and the owner swears it is a 2000 model. My old DS650 was built 07/2000 and it was a 2001 model. I've looked at 2 other DS650's built 07/2000 and both were 2001 models. When do machines become titled for the new model year? Is the owner wrong, or am I just going crazy!?!? Anybody else have a machine built in July? What year does your title say??

WIscrambler,
I was always under the impression that 09 (September) was the first month of the new model / year. My 2001 DS650 is 10/00 I believe and my 2003 is 10/02. However, if you are sure your DS was 07/00 and it was a 2001 then that would mean more than likely all 07/00 machines are 2001 models. There are some other ways to see what year it is for sure:
1. Look at the oil filter cover, the 2001 and newer DS650s use a new longer oil filter. (If you buy a 2000 you'll want the upgrade - all you need to buy is the cover & start using the bigger filters.)
2. There is a complete list of changes on a DS650 website, unfortunatly I can't provide a link. (email me or something.) However the only very obvious externally visible change is the oil filter. For 2001 the tires were the same, rims, all of the major goodies were the same. They did add an oil vent line somewhere, howeverI can't help you find it as I've never looked for it & don't know where or what I'd be looking for. (Not sure that I've ever seen a 2000 DS in person since I'd bought my 2001.)
Bahazzzz1,
You'll want to look at the sticker on the chassis to see what month your machine was made in. What goodies do you have on your Baja? I'm starting to think about getting power adding goodies some day in the future.

I think my sticker says june or july, not sure which one. As far as things I have done, MBRP pipe (noise reasons) and jet kit, renthal bars (raptor bars dont hit the tank), bombardier carbon fiber colour kit, eletric oil pressure gauge, matching dent resistant rings welded into the inside of my rear rims, and a swing arm skid plate.
