I'm fairly certain I understand the dimensions of ATV tires, but I would like a bit more information.

A tire that is 20x12x10
20 = tire height
12 = inner dia of tire OR rim size
10 = width of tire

Now then, I can understand if a tire or rim is +/- an inch in width it will still fit. But if the middle number is off from that of the rim, will it or will it not fit?

So if I buy the above tire...20x12x10 Will they fit on a 10x9 rim? or do I need a 12x9 or 12x10 rim?

Dumb question I know, but none of the dealers can tell me either!

I just now took it upon myself to view other (older) posts.

Looks like I'm wrong.

20x12x10

20 = tire height
12 = tire width
10 = inner tire dia / rim size needed

I answered my own question, I hope...

Don't worry KawasakiKid,

I feel there are no dumb questions, although I have heard some dumb answers (hehe)

Anyway,

The three number do reflect the tire size in inches and here is how it goes

22x11x8 - The first number (22) is the overall height in inches. The second number (11) is the overall width. The third number (8) is the size of the hole in the tire where the rim goes. So an appropriate rim size for this tire would be 8x8.

In your example 20x12x10, You would need a 10x8, 10x9 or 10x10 inch wheel for this tire because the last number is the wheel size.

Oh and concerning wheels the first number is the overall diameter and the second number is the width.

You are close, on a 20x12-10 tire

20 = it is 20 inches high
12 = it is 12 inches wide
10 = the rim size in 10 inch

Hope that this helped you decide what to buy.

Thanks guys, but I had a question for Brad_L.. You kinda confused me by saying

"In your example 20x12x10, You would need a 10x8, 10x9 or 10x10 inch wheel for this tire because the last number is the wheel size."

When referring to tires HxWxR (height x width x rim size dia.)

But when you refer to rims 10x8 (is the 1st number the width of the rim or the diameter)?

In my mind I see it like this

tire 22x12x10
rim 10x9

In the case above I know we're saying the tire is 12" wide, but are we saying the rim is 9 or 10" wide?

You must match the tire's inner diameter with the diameter of the rim correct?? Because that's like putting a 15" car tire on a 13" rim, it's not gonna happen.

Also, what's your opinion on putting a 12" wide tire on a 10" wide rim? (if I understand your post correctly you're giving a 3" leeway).

Thanks again guys.

A 10x8 rim is 10" in diameter and 8" wide. You had it right. 22x12x10 tire fits a 10x9 rim.

Concerning wheel sizes,

10x9 would be a wheel that has a 10 inch diameter and 9 inches of width.

A 20x12x10 tire would fit on a 10x8, 10x9, or a 10x10 wheel with no problem.

I have a set of 22x12x10 Spider Tracks mounted on a set of 10x10 wheels.

They're both 10" rims so it will work.
