Default Plug Checking--- Process and How long?

I've got all kinds of info on how to read your plugs but very little info on how to prepare for plug readings....

How long should I "break-in" a new plug prior to taking any readings?

Should I just putt-putt around the yard and a lazy ride down the hill and back and then go through the process of plug checks?

Should I ride around for 15-20 minutes "playing" and then do the plug reading process?

I guess what I'm needing to know is how long does it take for the plug to give a true reading?

Also, I've got a K&N and Supertrapp IDS2 with 10 disks in it and just put in a 160 main (up from a 155)....I haven't really been able to do a real good plug process but from what little I can do I'm afraid I might still be lean...but I did find a great place to do business here locally, VERY helpful shop that has as a main business of building drag bikes....they know horsepower! im not sure about the new plug but i was told i should run 1/4 mile at 1/4 throttle then again at 1/2&3/4 then wot..when you go for the 1/4 mile ride keep the throttle as steady as possible, and hit the kill switch, cost to a stop and then check the plug..hope this helps

And when do you adjust the air/fuel screw?

I would think that the 160 should be good. That is what comes with the HPD exhaust. Try turning your air/fuel screw 3 turns out from lightly seated and see what that does for you

I changed it today....and yup, I got it from Horsepower Unlimited.....had a good talk with the owner.

BigBad...just to reinforce my un-mechanicalness....the air/fuel screw is the philips-head screw attached to a short tube-like thing going to the right side of the carb (if looking at it from a riding position)? I can't find any real reference to it in the maintenance manual...

My quad does bog a little on the bottom if I go from idle to wide open....

I believe you are right about its location. It may have a brass plug that you have to drill out. It is #32 on this diagram. My manual refers to it as the "pilot screw". That may help you some

That is the idle adjuster for the carb. I am very familiar with that cuz mine broke (the cable rusted and snapped) when I took my carb off to jet it for the exhaust. It took a lot of messing around with it to get it to idle right after that. Be carful with it. I didn't realize that that little cable is a $40 part!!!
