adding 2 55 watt lights to a 400ex. can tha stator handle it?
#1
im installing some "wheelie lights" on my 400ex that point downward so i can see where im going at night while riding wheelies. its kind of a strange idea but its getting dark at 4:30 now so i dont have very much daylight. no my question is: would i be able to run all the stock lights along with tha extra 2 55 watt halogen lights or would that be too much strain on tha stator to run the lights and keep the battery charged, keep in mind that im running a 440 so i need all tha starting power i can get. now for my second idea: have a switch that turns off the stock lights and turns on tha wheelie lights so i can switch ack and forth from 4 wheeling to 2 wheeling

No...not with a stock stator
this will not allow your stator to catch back up and keep the battery charged
call the good folks at Ricky Stator(these are truly good people) they can tell you what you can run from stock...even with a high output stator from them they say only 2 55w lights

I have 2 55 watt lights on my 400ex i just use them when i need them I also have them on a switch. I have used them with my other lights riding for a while in the woods and stuff and never had a starting problem. i try not to use them unless i need to because i dont want to mess the stator up. Can it damage the stator? i had 2 55watt lights on my trx300 that i would run all the time with my normal lights and i never had a problem with it. heck the stator was the only electrical part still good when i got it running again. i dont think they will hurt your 400 especially if you are cutting off your regular lights when in use.

I just bought two 35W trail tech torche lights and tried running them at night in glamis, the stator couldn't keep up to charge the battery. Trail tech says I now have to buy their low watt HID lights. I just brought these other lights and used them once. Does any know if there is a solution to be able to run stock and these at the same time.

The stock stator should put out 147 watts, at 5000 rpm. Keep in mind, it is much less than that at idle.
I would think your system could handle a couple of 35 watts bulbs, on top of everything else thats stock. Id turn them off at idle, and once underway, you could switch them on.
Hows your battery? been load tested lately?

Lets do the math on the wattage situation, Hondabuster lists the stator output at 147 watts so we'll use that for our base. You have two 35 watt lights stock plus two more 35 watt add-on lights thats 140 watts already. Then add in power to run the engine, tail light and charge the battery. I would guesstimate that draw at 40 watts, + or- 20 watts depending on battery draw. Thats a total of 180watts with all 4 lights going.
It sounds like separating them is a good idea.
