Hi all, I,m thinking about getting an older Sportsman 400 ('97- '00). I've got a small ranch up in Utah and currently have a Trailblazer 250 and a Kawasaki Lakota. I'm very happy with both but the kids are growing up and have taken over the Trailblazer and Lakota from my wife and I. They've got the old Suzuki LT 125 and 185's which they've outgrown. I really like the Trailblazer because it's perfect IMO for trailriding. I'd like to get something bigger than the 250, the Sportsman 400 sounded like a good choice for me, after all I can't let the kids beat me down the trail lol. Would appreciate any feedback from 400 owners, also were there any problems with the 400 in certain years? Thanks!!

 

If it has the 2 cycle engine, be sure that the air cleaner has been maintained, the chassis is tight (check to see it was greased) and the chains & 4wd system is good.

One other thing that is fairly common on the older Polaris non-IRS machines, is the right hand side of the swingarm working loose (the mounting bolt comes loose). There are fixes for it, but it is something to be aware of. If the bolt has been loose a long time, it can cause the ear on the frame the swingarm bolts to become egg-shaped, which will then require welding a new ear on, or a washer to fix it.

Hey I was reading about the 400 and saw you live in Vegas. So do I and I have narrowed my search between an Arctic Cat and a Polaris Sportsman 400. What did you end up going with and who did you buy from? I have been looking over in Utah cause that's where our friend got his Arctic Cat. I would be interested to know what you got. Hope you are liking it!!!
