Default Chain Problems with my 2 Lt 250s

I have an 85 and a 86 Lt 250r. On both of the quads we have a hard time keeping the chains adjusted. The chain has come off 3 times on the one bike and ripped a hole in the side of the case each time. It appears the chains are streching real fast. I bought a "DID" $100 chain and it barely lasted a season...any ideas...Does any know of an aftermarket gizmo to help keep the chain tight...

Its probably the adjuster slipping, sometimes you have to get them really tight.

make sure to torque the 4 big bolts down. and then tighten the adjusters.
make sure the adjusters are not stripped also

Sorry TomM and evhwg, but the 85 and 86s came with a round carrier if you didn't know.

BigAl1610, I had that problem to but I caught it B4 it did any damage. What I did was rough the carriers surface with some I think 120grit sand paper. What that does is give it some grip. haven't had aproblem since. Hope this helps

My 86 has a round carrier, but it has 2 big Allan head bolts that tighten it to keep it from slipping (spinning). Those are the ones I was referring to. I never had a problem with it on the Quadracer but I used to have a Quadsport with the same type carrier and I really had to crank it down to keep it from spinning. Roughing up the surface would be the better way to go though. That way there is no chance of stripping the bolt threads out.

check your rear sprocket and the hub it rides on and also the rear bearing and front swing arm bearing, if any of these wear it will cause the chain to jump off, hope this helps

Those are good suggestions...but there is another issue. It seems that these 2 bikes stretch the chains quite a bit too. I purchased quality chains but that also seems to be a problem. I will check the bearings (Iwas wondering about an alignment problem) and scuff up the carrier...Thanks Guys

Well.....if and I mean IF you have the money I would think about a Sidewinder sprocket and chain combo..I have had mine since last March/April and its has stretched very little and I ride in sand and mud here on the Farm and I have ridden it at least 4-5 days a week till Halloween (Its getting an engine build over the winter) since then.
