Default Factory carb setup

I installed a dyno jet kit this summer when I put on my slip on. Im now having a problem when the bike is cold. When the rpm's are slowly increased, it will hit 2000 rpm, cough and drop down to idle. The kit was installed exactly as the instructions indecated. Now when im running my DS in freezing and below temp, it will do it when the engine is warm. Any suggestions if I need to make a pilot screw or neddle adjustment?

The colder temps will make it run more lean, try richening up the needle one. The pilot mainly controls how the bike starts up, some people have put a bigger pilot in to help it start up easier in cold conditions.

Do you know what the stock pilot jet size is ? My ds starts hard cold and will not idle till warmed up.
Then it idles at 1300rpm. I am also get a back fire out the exhaust pipe whin letting off the gas going
down hills or just hitting gas in neutral and reving engine and letting off. It is the stock carb. 175 main jet
have not done anything to needle ,stock setting what ever that is. Just put new trinity stage IV pipe on and they gave me a 190 main jet to put in. Should I do any thing with pilot jet and what should I do with the needle move it up one spot on the clip?

The needle slots are numbered one through five, going from the flat top of the needle to the bottom pointed part. Move the clip down the needle to #3 or #4 slot. I forget what size the pilot jet is, if you do a search I think you'll find it here though. If you are having trouble starting it -could- be the pilot jet. How many hours do you have on your DS650? Hard starting is also a sign of the valves not being adjusted. The first valve adjustment is due at 10 hours, the second at about 100 hours. I strongly suggest performing the valve adjustment on schedule as it has an extreme impact on how the machine performs. I had the dealer perform my 10 hour service on my 2001 DS, I think all they did was change the oil - I don't think they checked the valves. Once I got my 2003 Baja, I waited till it was at 10 hours and did the valves on both ATVs. Both needed to be adjusted & the 2001 (90 hours on it) was way out of line and it was starting to show it as I noticed it was dramatically easier to start after adjusting the valves.

Thanks. I will adjust my valves my self, I don't think the dealer here has very good tech's
So do they sell a shim kit or what do you do if they need to be ajusted? Do I need to get a new valve cover
gasket before I tear into it or is the valve cover gasket o-ring type?

ps. I am a Ford guy to. Work at ford dealer for 15 years as a tune up tech.
Now I am at Dodge.

I bought about $50-60 worth of valve shims for the project at $6/each. I have two DS' so it was worth it for me - though if you only have one, it may be wiser to make sure you have a local shop that has a good selection of sizes in stock, then tear apart your machine & see what you need. These are 29mm round shims. Used in the DS, BMW F650 as well as the Kawasaki Police 1000. (I bought my shims from the Kawi dealer.) It's hard to say what sizes you could need - both of my DS' were different from the factory. My Baja had 240s in the intakes and the 2001 had 225s I think.. I believe I bought a pair of everything from 215 to like, 250-ish.

You shouldn't need a new gasket for the valve cover, even on my 2001 with 90 hours it came off nicely and looked to be in good condition.

Now you work at Dodge eh? Do you drive a Ford still while working for Dodge? I've got a buddy who's worked for Dodge for many years, not to mention his wife & son do as well. I think that is one of the most 'Dodge' Families I've ever seen. I figure in 2007 or 2008 when I look to replace my F150 I'll look at Dodge again. They were close in '98 but not close enough. In 1998 the Chevy's just weren't much to speak of, though now they're looking better.
