Default Raptor starter issue after oneway replacement

My starter one way started showing signs of the typical Yamaha starter problem, so I went out and bought the L&A designs one way kit. I went ahead and pulled everything apart according to the directions from raptortranny.com. The repair went pretty smooth. I got everything together, topped off the oil, started the Raptor up and it sounded good. I shut it down and was done for the night.

The next day I went out to start it up so that I could warm up the engine and change the oil. It started up fine, but after running for a few minutes, the was a noise coming from the case where the starter/one way is located. It is hard to explain the noise, but it was almost like a medium high pitch rubbing noise. I shut the quad off, waited a couple of minutes, started it back up and the noise was gone for about the first 5 - 10 seconds, but then it came back. Revving the engine didn't seem to have any effect on the noise. I let it run for another 30 seconds and then shut it off. I have no idea what could be causing this noise. It is not real loud, but loud enough that it is real noticable. I don't want to run the quad anymore till I can figure out what this problem is. Anyone have any ideas on this?

The quad is a 2003, I got the complete oneway kit that included the gaskets, new allen bolts and the 52t gear. The whole job went smooth and everything was torqued to specs. The oil level is where is should be. I don't mind pulling it apart again, but I don't know what could be causing this problem and would like to see if anyone else has experienced this problem and possible give me some feedback.
Thanks.

Did you try to spin the 52T gear after you torqued the crank nut down?
I've heard that if you over torque the nut down you can bind the one way up & if you did the 52T gear would have been very hard to turn by hand (this has happened to peole who tigtened the crank nut too tight with an impact).

If that's not it I'm not sure what to tell you except take it back apart & look for where something may have been rubbing.

Yes, I did try to spin it, and it did spin freely one way and did not spin the other way, which is should. I did torque everything to specs. It is almost like it is not getting oil splashed on the gears/clutch for some reason, that is why it takes 5 - 10 seconds for the noise to start when I first start the quad. I am guessing on this, I just don't know what else to think. You are right though, I am going to have to dissable it to see if I can find anything. I am also wondering if the new bearing is defective. I inspected it before I put it on, and it looked fine. Thanks.

Ok, I pulled the cover back off and I started to spin the 52t gear one way, and you could slightly hear the noise that it was making. It sounds like the same noise anyhow. It is very hard to hear, but the noise is there. Is it possible that the new bearing could be bad? That is what I am thinking. The gears are definately getting oiled. Everything was wet with oil. I may take off the starter clutch and reinstall/retorque it back on.

What is the condition of the smooth surface the rollers are supposed to ride against? If it's boogered up you'll need to replace that gear. It could be the cause of the noise. Also mine made a bit of noise the first time I ran it but I figured it was an oiling issue and rolled the machine onto that side for a couple minutes to thoroughly flood the area with motor oil. The sound went away and hasnt come back in the several months it's been installed. Btw the LA design one way should be purchased in bulk by Yamaha and given out to every Raptor owner..... yeah sure that'll happen...

Definitely pull the flywheel and see whats going on. There should be no noise.

Pull the L&A and flywheel off and verify that all the rollers are free and not binding up on the side case of the unit. The sides are not as rigid as the rest of the unit and if banged while installing or shipping it can lock the roller (pinch) againts the opposite side. From the sounds of your description its higly possible.

Look at the rollers and see if any of them are squared from not spinning.

Well, I pulled everything completely apart, put it back together, and so far, no noise. I didn't do anything different. I did notice that when I had it apart, I put the 52t gear onto the bearing and spun it, and you could hear the noise faintly. If i would pull the gear out of the bearing just a little, the noise went away. I also put the old 52t gear into the bearing, spun it, and it was quiet other than the noise from the old 52t being pitted. Maybe it just needed to wear in, but that noise was pretty noticable when it was running. But, so far, so good. My kid has been running the quad now for a couple hours and there has not been any problems. I really appreciate everyones help and suggestions. That is what made me pull it back apart and reinstall it fixing the problem.
Thanks again.
