I have a LT230 and I just recently rebuilt it. New rings, gaskets, clutch, valves, seals, etc. I did all of the work myself except for the valve job. I bought new valves and seals for about $40.00 and took it to the local ATV shop and had them do the valve job. They charged $100 labor. When I got it back I noticed the ports were still FULL of carbon! Is it not standard practice to clean the head when you're doing a valve job? I mean dang when they had the valves out would have been a perfect time! I thought my $100 covered this.
I called the shop today and just asked "When ya'll do a valve job do you clean the ports?" and he said yes so I asked to speak with the service department but he said they were all out to lunch. So I'll call back tomorrow.
But is it pretty standard practice to clean it? The ports were still very dirty and I had to take a brush to them. The ATV is now back together but when I call the shop tomorrow what should I say?
I was rebuilding it so I could sell it and pay cash for a brand new Banshee in January so I know I'll probably think twice about buying it from this place. Would it be reasonable to ask for a partial refund at least?

Hi im a mechanic not bike but industrial.
If the shop diid the job you asked them to ie re cut seats and lap the valves technicaly they have done the job. However to return the head to you with carboned up ports and the valves fitted is a disgrace. It would make me seriosly question the standard of their mechanic.
I would think if they want to keep the buisness that they shoud recompence you for your time to remove, clean and refit the valves.
Or at least offer you freebie.
Also if you do come away happy i would still think twice about letting some one with that much pride in there work mess with my engine.
