Stupid Mistake Wrong Oil Need Advice
#1
Okay pulled a stupid mistake and put the wrong oil in my ATV. Grabbed the motor oil instead of cycle oil. It has the whatever lubricants you do not want. Do I need to flush this stuff out or just drain it and put the other oil in? I am worried about any residual that may be left. Thanks for your help. Luckily I have not ridden it after the mixup.

Suggest draining the oil as completely as possible. Fill with correct oil. Run until you reach normal operating temperature. Drain completely again and refill with correct oil. Most residual additives should be removed by then. Be sure and change the filter each time. Happy trails !

you should flush the wrong oil. fill with correct oil w/ oil flush(goto advance auto and get some), start and let idle till normal operating temp, and flush. fill with correct oil. that oil flush should get all those wrong residue and what not out of your motor.

It was not the weight it was the brand. I put in Havolin SAE 10W30 but it has the anti friction stuff that can cause the clutch to slip and wear. Now my motto is look twice pour once.

Buck, a 10W30 should be fine in your bike. What ingredients does it list as these "anti-friction" additives? I would check the labels between the two. Chances are, those additives are just labeling hype and that the oil contains no special ingredients versus other oils. I run Rotella 15W40 in all my quads (including a 686 Raptor, a banshee, and a Grizzly) as well as my trucks, two tractors and a car. Never had a clutch even think about slippin in my rappy or banshee. I bet you can run that oil with no problems and it might even be better for your engine than your "cycle oil".

If the oil has the words "energy conserving" in the little SAE circle, it has friction modifiers and is not recommended for wet clutches. It's hard to find 10w30 synthetic without friction modifiers, easier to find 10w40 synthetic without additives. Just look for the little white SAE circle, if the bottom half of the circle is empty, you are good to go. When I can't get Amsoil, I use Mobil1 10w40 in all of our wet clutch machines.

All auto oils that are 5w30 and 10w30 are energy conserving. Of course the energy conserving oils are gonna increase the potential for clutch slip. If you can use the energy conserving oill without clutch slip it would be beneficial for the life of your engine. Several years back the govt mandated that fuel conpanies change something (I forget) in the fuel that yields 10% less fuel economy. At the same time, the govt mandated that oil companies provide 10% more fuel economy....so the new energy conserving oils are a little "slicker"....
