Sure is lean but runs great!

Well, after much debate I decided to go ahead and lean out the 720 due to ridiculous amounts of carbon on the exhaust flange and sluggish performance. I ended up with a 140 main, 97 (leanest available) needles clip #1, 35 pilot, A/S 1 3/4 out and accel. pump jet 50 (leanest) with about 3.5mm trimmed off the plunger rod to reduce squirt duration. This is a TM 45 of course. Anyway, this thing absolutely RIPS now, what a difference! Anyone else ever go this lean? I'm at 1800' elevation, 45 degrees. 105 octane race fuel.

Get to a dyno...I know what you mean about all that black soot and carbon build up, but...like you I just kept thinking I'm rich and leaning her out to a point where I thought something else was wrong. My second run on the dyno last tue with the tm45 prooved otherwise. With MRHP calling the shots we went from a 147.5 main to a 155 and gained 12 hp! Much happier with the lectron 46hv tho...gotta tm45 that needs a new home...anyone?

We started with a 160 and worked our way down to a 140 as well (137.5 started back the other direction), and picked up a few ponies on the way! Stock bore - 110 oct.

Hello Hillbilly:
I do'nt have that carb but maybe I can help you out. I do run different pumper carbs on some of my machs. 1st- disable the pumper on the carb. 2nd get the jetting right without it. 3rd hook pumper back up. 4th start on the slow idle, which should be fine away. Then mid than high, make sure to mark it on your carb each one. This way on the mid (needle) you can get it right ect. 5th change the main now, you'll know when your there when the bog or poping is gone.
Forget about the amounts of carbon. It's a pumper and your on the gas all the time. Yea I like that feel of it to.
The carbon will always be there. Not unless your runnig it to lean. On the plunger you should not have to cut it down, but if it works for you well. You should have just back it off some, the plunger ajustment is there for you to use for different riding, tracks ect.
I would keep an eye out on my tail pipe also. Do'nt want to see any metal coming out of it. I'm not a pro at this, but it works for me.
