Default aftermarket for a stock Zilla? what to buy?

I'm gettin an 89 zilla that other than a pipe and twin air filter is bone stock. I wont be riding dunes cause we dont have any and I dont need nerf bars. what are some relatively cheap things you reccomend I get for my baby. I put a link at the bottom of this message to a page with pics on it of the zil ill be getting. Not looking for anything too expensive. more like bumpers maybe skid plates, i will need new tires soon.

Well the first thing that I can suggest is get a case saver. Just in case you don't know what that is, its a piece that fits neer the sproket on the motor that keeps the chain, if broken, from chewing the motor case really, really bad. I think they are like 25 bucks. As for bumpers and skid plates, goto rockymountainatv.com and look for all the available stuff for the zilla, I get everything I need for my Zilla from there.

Congrats on the new bike! First thing is to replace that bolt which is missing on the left side magneto cover. Replace the gasket if necessary. You don't want water to get in there! While the cover is off, grab the flywheel and aggressively rock it up and down. If you feel any play that means your bearings are going bad and this will damage your seals causing a lean condition in your engine (it will suck air through the bearing). If that happens you'll burn up your top end! If you rebuild your bottom end, have steel case inserts installed so it will be permanently fixed. This will run around $350-$400.

Get a water pump rebuild kit and install it as these had faulty stock units.

If your moving it to a new elevation from where the previous owner rode it, then check your jetting. Check www.Duncanracing.com for their tech articles (Keihin jetting) will help you figure out your Mikuni for the most part. Get some new plugs before you rejet it though.

A rear shock service may be due about $80 for seals and oil. A revalve probably is not necessary.

Check your radiator level too. A 50/50 mix of water and aluminum freindly coolant is good. Definitely replace your air filter and caulk with silicone around the area where the air duct between your airbox and carb meets with the airbox. This is a weak area which can leak dirt into your intake. Replace your tranny fluid. Belray told me to use their 80W Gearsaver and it was recommended by other Zilla riders.

Good luck with it.

If he did everything right then you shouldn't have any problems. Just keep your air filter clean and replace your tranny oil every 20 hours or so. I was just giving you a heads-up on weak points of the Zilla so you would watch for them. Now you know!
