Scrambler Tranny Mod
#1
I'm looking for some assistance. I plan to pick up a new Scrambler 500 - but I want to modify the tranny from the get go. I was told that a Sportsman 500 tranny would bolt right in. Then someone told me and older Polaris tranny would bolt right in. I don't want to do any modification to the frame if I don't have to, but I want the option of low/high range. I do a lot of plowing with mine current 400 Scrammy, but it tends to eat up at least one belt/winter. I want the high range and speed for all around riding - so getting a Sportman isn't an interest to me. Thanks all - Modquad, didn't you write an article on this topic a while back??

It may work with an older SP500 tranny as long as the rear is not shaft drive. I've heard of two guys doing the swap with an Explorer 400 tranny. I think you need to run the same size tires and sprockets as the 400 for the 4x4 to work like it should. You may be able to just mess with the sprockets to get the right ratio. earlier swap thread
