2004.5 Sp500 Acting Funny....

Okay, here I am the proud owner of a brand new machine. Love it. Still getting used to the differences from my Scrambler and this beast. The problem seems to be the machine does not want to idle. At first I thought it was because it was not warming up. Then I rode it enough to where the fan is kicking on. (Low range hill climbing) So I ruled out that the machine was definately warm enough at this point. It seems that if the machine is not PERFECTLY level that it stalls out. If the machine is parked level....in the garage it idles fine at around 1190 RPM. Just seems to die on me out in the woods.
In trying to diagnose my own problem it seems that I do have a little extra slack in my thumb throttle (which I should be able to adjust myself.....I did my Scrambler) but that shouldn't effect idle speed. But then I don't think idle speed needs adjusted because it idles perfectly on LEVEL ground. Anyone have any suggestions before I make a trip to the dealer??
By the way I only have 16 miles on the machine so far. Haven't gotten a chance to get a good ride in with some friends. Should I forget about it until after 100 miles or so?
Also, the owners manual says to NOT use the accelerator while starting. Guess what, I have to touch the throttle when starting or it won't....even using the choke. First place I am going to look is the thumb throttle slack....if that doesn't work then what?
PS> still waiting for my tire chains to show up.....but now we don't have any snow.

Scott, I always have to give it a little throttle when starting mine. Just a little, though. Have you played with the idle adjustment ****? It's under the left side panel, right off the carb. My dealer said to use it when adjusting the idle, and not the barrel adjuster on the throttle cable. (Something about causing problems with the stuck throttle sensor)
Perhaps there's a problem with the float level in the carb.

sounds like to much slack in the throttle cable, try the cable first, sometimes the machines come that way from the factory and you just have to tweak so very slightly........................................

I am wondering if you are not jetted right. Any other symptoms? The other thing that comes to mind is an incorrect float height in your carb. If it is under warranty, I would take it back to the dealership (assumming you have faith in them).

Badazzpred was right. Too much slack in throttle cable which makes the machine think the throttle cable was frozen and the ETC switch to touch which kills the machine. Looking for a quick fix, I noticed that there was no throttle cable adjustment on the top side of the handle bars. That would conclude that all the adjustment is done at the carb or there is not any adjustment at all. Not wanting to spend all day on it and remembering problems with my Scramblers ETC switch needing periodic adjustment......I took the spring out of the damn switch which effectively disables the ETC. In 13 years of riding I've only had a throttle cable freeze up once and I quickly killed the machine with the kill switch (Yamaha). I understand why Polaris feels the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) switch is necessary, however, if I feel if you don't know what to do if your throttle freezes then you shouldn't be driving anyway.
So with my throttle taken care of the machine idles great on any surface and I'm once again content with my new quad....except for that damn rattle I have up front. Damn employees trying to help out the dealers with service calls I suppose.

scott glad to see I was of help, and you got it fixed, from the way you made it sound in your post, I had the exact problem with my 03 predator and all I did was make a simple adjustment to the etc/throttle cable and it worked sweet, then when I got my 04 predator it was fine from the factory no adjustment needed. Well time for you to get some riding done take care........................scott
