I’m looking for a winch for my new 4x4 Rancher, and I was wondering what everyone else is using on their Ranchers? How do you like it? Did you have any problems with the fit or wiring during the installation?

Thanks.

Warn 2000 is a good winch. Ease of installation is dependent on the winch mount kit you buy. If you intend on using the winch to lift a snow plow, ensure that you get the winch mount kit for a snow plow.

Brian,
Just a suggestion if your not married, try to find a wife whose name is Kim. That way she would be Kim Kimmel. I think that would be pretty cool.

BigRed450,
Actually I do intend on using the winch for lifting a snow plow. What is the difference between a regular winch mounting kit, and a winch mounting kit for a snow plow?

Besides the winch mounting kit, you might consider a mechanical spring brake for your winch, standard on the Superwinch ATV2000, extra cost ($ 22) on the Superwinch T1500, and extra on Warn A2500 and A2000. The spring brake helps prevent the blade from slipping when set at the desired height.

I have a Warn A2000 on my Rancher. I like the way that it mounted up under the front end, you only see the hook sticking through the Roller Fairlead. I have used it a few times and it has worked well. This is the only winch that I have owned so I don't know anything about the others. They might be just as good.
Tree Farmer, I plan to use the winch to raise my snowplow. I haven't used it in snow yet, but I tried to back drag my gravel driveway to smooth it out and didn't have much luck. The blade just rode on top of the gravel. What is a spring break? Would it help me? Is there a better way to to do this?

The Cycle Country Snowplow winch mount for instance comes complete with a roller fairlead with a special mount that mounts into your front bumper. The standard winch mount relies on the fairlead on the winch frame itself (Warn Winches) or no fairlead at all (Superwinch).

A spring brake retards winch drum rotation. Without this additional mechanical braking, the drum is retarded only by gear friction/resistance and dynamic braking provided by the shunt of the winch control switch (or control solenoid relays) in the "OFF" position.

An internal spring brake provides additional resistance to spool rotation/cable slip from line pull.

At least some Superwinch mounting kits (specifically, some from CMP, the company producing also "Moose" mounting kits) come with roller fairleads; also, some models of Superwinch winches sold separately come with hawse fairleads.
