I'm going to do the valve adjustments my self on my Raptor.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/img] I would appreciate any helpful hints of what and what not to do.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] Any specific tools that will make it easier?[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]

 

I would get the feeler guages with the pre bend. It makes it a little easier on the exhaust side. Also i adjust mine on the high end of the range because they tend to tighten not loosen.

 

Here's a few tips.
The intakes tend to tighten up. here's the tools needed and a few tips.

Tools
Torque wrench
5mm allen socket
10mm socket
19mm socket to turn engine
10mm, 17mm wrenches
The tool to turn adjuster would be nice but I use needle nose pliers
Angled feeler gauge .005" intake .007" exhaust
Big flat head screw driver to remove timing covers

Turn engine over counter clockwise when aligning the timing marks. After your intakes open then close it's about a half turn of the crank to align the marks. There are two sets of marks that look like this ( ll and l ) use the (l) mark you'll come to the (ll) marks first.

When making the adjustment I snug the lock nut just enough that I can still turn the adjuster. Then snug the nut down a little more with a wrench while holding the adjuster so it does'nt move, then torque and recheck clearance.

 

Both times i have checked mine the exhaust were fine, no need to adjust. You may have to adjust yours but for some reason mine were fine.

are you getting serious about the valve adjustment?i live in jamul and was wondering about seeing how this is done.i want to learn how to do it.i think but not sure without double checking that the raptor tranny.com has a write up about valve adjustments.could be wrong.

 

I was going to do it before this weekends trip but don't have the time. I was also thinking of doing it out there. But most likely will do it when I get back. So if I do it when I get back I will pm you to see if you can come over and play. I will be learning too.

 

i wouldnt do it out there.there is so much dust blowing and it only takes one grain to f*%$@ something up.its amazing where you end up finding sand after a trip to the dunes.my bike is an 01 and its never had a valve adjustment.it runs great i just feel guilty i'm not doing what should have been done.
i would love to drop by and see what its all about if you dont mind and our schedules dont conflict.
