I myself have often wondered where they got the extra weight from. Afterall, they changed the aluminum oil tank to a plastic one, as well as other small things. Where did the extra weight come from???

Welcome to ATV Connection.
I would speculate most of the weight would come from replacing more of the aluminum components with steel. I know over the years they went from aluminum wheels to steel, aluminum floorboards to steel, and I think the front bumper is now also steel. The swing arm was also beefed up over the years. I'm not sure exactly when all the changes took place, just know that those are some reasons why its weight went from 542 lbs in '98 to 571 lbs in 2004.
