Default 400 sport maintance

I bought a 99 400 sport, it runs pretty well i was wondering what is the maintance i should do one it?
it seems that when i put it in reverse it takes a lot of gas to move, unless you hit the over ride switch and then it goes.
the dealer wants 130 dollars to change the trans oil and tighten belts. i was wondering if this can be done by me (very mechnically inclined just never worked on quads)

thanks

It probably has a clutch kit in it which is why you have to hit the override button to go in reverse. As far as tranny fluid and the belt, you can do that yourself easy. You can get a new belt and service the trans yourself for around 50 dollars. Let us know if you need anymore help on it. A service manual is a great tool to own, I know haynes makes one, I'd try to get a hold of one, it'll really help.

From what I know, I would probably change the counter balance oil, and the gearcase oil. It isn't real hard, just a matter of taking off the skid plate and then loosening a couple of drain plugs. I would also check the air filter and make sure that it is clean and descent. A good greasing could be good for it too. I've never heard of "tightening" the belt, I always thought that you just put a new one on. Maybe someone else will give you some better advice. Brad

If you plan on actually riding the machine, keep a couple sets of tie rod ends on hand. Mine used to go out about every fourth ride, even the updated 2000 models.

That was the only problem I ever had with my Sport.

I wouldn't worry about the tie rods, I've never had a problem with them! You can remove a shim in the secondary clutch to adjust belt deflection, although it's easier just to get a new belt. If the belt is even or sunk in on the secondary clutch, replace it!

Pull the clutch cover off and tell us what color the spring is in the primary clutch!

I do not know the proper name for the fan cicuit, but it is a thermostat that has three ranges
1)cool=> fan & light off
2)warm=>fan on & light off
3)hot=> fan on & light on

hope this helps!
