Planning trip to Sand Mountain..
#1
Some friends and I are wanting to go to Sand Mt, Nv for memorial day. We have never been and can't find much on the web as far as maps, camping areas, etc. I have been to "friends of sand mt" and the nevada BLM web site but not much info. I know it's like 35 miles out of Fallon but would feel lots better with a map.. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

if I remember right. there are maps on wyoduner.com for the dune riding areas. I have never looked at the maps. so I do not know how good they are.
I just looked at wyoduner maps there was not one for sand mountain.
topozone.com is a really cool map site.

As for maps there really isn't much to it. It is a smaller riding area and all the camping is what I call "parking lot style" Meaning it isn't much better than if you were to take your trailer down to Walmart and camp there on a Saturday Morning. It gets loud and crowded. Best bet is to camp on the left as soon as it opens up. Don't worry, you couldn't miss it if you were Mr. Magoo. If you are going for the races and aren't as concerned about the noise but, want more of the partying go up to the second bathroom and hang a left. Anywhere there is good. You are real close to the hill and where the vendor's will be.
I know it may sound a little negative above but, I actually love it! Just not a good weekend for the kids. We usually arrive Wed. night and get a big circle so the kids can play inside and be safe.
Bring a few sets of sprockets and get ready to drag. You'll love the hill. If you have never raced up a long steep hill there is nothing like it. What makes this place unique is from just about any camp site you can see people racing up the hill (you may need binoculars from the further sites but, you can still see the dots racing up the hill!) A lot of fun when all of a sudden there are about 10 Yellow DS's going up the hill!

Spin,
Sand Mt. is in my neighborhood. Yeah the boys are correct. Just follow Hwy 50 East out of Fallon about half an hour. You can miss that big pile of sand on the left. The description of the campsite is accurate. We usually get there as early as possible thursday and try to get a spot just inside the park entrance on the left away from the main road. (I like my sleep) But if you want to be close to the action and partying go close to the Mountain on the left. The BLM has become ****'s about flags, helmets and stay out of the red flag areas. It is a great place to spend a weekend. Make sure you explore some of the trails to the northeast of the main mountain. There are many small dunes where you can get away from the crowds and work on some technique If you have more questions please PM me.

the only way you can miss that big pile of sand is if you arrive after the sun sets like we did. I do recall that there was a sign of some kind and found it anyway.
It's a fun place to play for a coupla days.

That's kinda why we're going that weekend, a friend of mine is putting the finishing touches on his alcohol 540cc +12mm stroke Trex Banshee with lockup clutch and override gear box built by Redline here in Oregon. He has recently put about $7k into the drive train and we're hoping for ~130hp. He's not looking to beat the heavy hitters but he should be one of the fastest stock chassis bikes. I plan on bringing some knobbies for some desert riding and my cameras for some good video. I'm really looking foward to doing some riding in warm weather

Yeah, I agree. You cant miss that big pile of sand. And if Gasser can find it......well, its easy to find. Not much else out there east of Fallon and it is well marked.
I agree with the idea to camp to the left and away from the road. It is very noisy close to the mountain. Stay close to the south west end and have a great trip. We may see you there.

Well thanks for all the information everybody. just a few more questions, is there any sand camping? From the pics I have seen the desert floor looks pretty hard, can we drive a 21' motor home out on the sand without getting it too stuck? Are we even allowed to do this? Do we have to buy some kind of day use permits?
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
