450R Owners: Dealer Prep. / Issues & Questions
#1
All of you that have your 450R...a few questions and observations:
- Regarding the tranny fluid: Per the manual, you check the tranny fluid level by unscrewing the check bolt, and as the book says: "A small amount of oil should flow out of the oil check bolt hole." Well I did this, and oil started flowing out, and kept coming and coming, with no signs of slowing down. Can you please check yours and post your findings? I let quite a bit come out, and it will keep flowing out of the hole if I let it. If no oil comes out, the book says to add oil until it just starts coming out of the check hole. I think the dealer may have way over-filled it, and just want to compare it to others out there.
- I just noticed on my 'R that 2 of the 3 white debris deflectors (in front of the radiator) were not mounted properly in their rubber grommets...you may want to check yours too, before they fall out while riding. I don't know if these were assembled by Honda or the dealer.
- Check your throttle free-play. Its supposed to be 3-8mm, and mine was way more than that. This can keep you from reaching full throttle. Adjust it to proper spec.
- During the 15hour break-in, do you think its ok to go Wide Open Throttle and bounce off the rev-limiter? The book says no WOT starts, and no rapid acceleration (lol)...but says nothing about reving to the limiter.
- How long are you guys going to go before changing the oils? Are you going to wait until the 1st maintenance (100miles) or do it sooner?
- Anyone know for certain if the 400EX oil filter is the same as the 450R's?
Just some of the things I've come across. Let me know what you all find on yours...

Thanks for the info, wish I could help. Mine won't be here for 10 days or so.
Kinda sounds like your dealer overfilled the oil. But I am not 100% sure, that will be a new thing for me as well. I would go by whatever the book says. I heard the same about filling until the oil runs out of the hole from another dealer when I was looking at the 450R they had on display at the Boat show.
I'll check the deflectors and throttle. I thought someone had said the break-in period was 15 miles. I think hitting the rev limiter probably falls into the rapid acceleration area. HA. There are different schools of thought. I will probably be fairly easy on mine, giving it a bit of hell occasionly until broke in. I just wouldn't stay on it all day.

Hello people, I read about proper break-in for motors of all kind, here is the theory.
1) Let engine warm up to temperature.
2) To seal the rings properly, need to have hard acceleration and deceleration under a load through out all gears.
3) Need to apply this technique for 15 - 20 miles - drag strip or motocross track (even better).
4) Once broke in, change oil right away to remove any excess materials floating inside engine.
5) They say not to use a synthetic oil because of its viscosity, could seep through rings when not sealed during break-in.
Good luck, this process makes hp more effecient, with out doing this, you could loose up to 10% in hp (not good).

I will check mine out tomorrow morning, right now its 11:00 at night though.
I rode mine pretty hard today and man was it was fun. I gonna go again tommorow can wait!
Did you get the performance kit for yours?I cant wait to bolt in that new cam!I be its really gonna run!

I remember reading that site and it sounds very good. My friend told me about some guy that took his quad (or it was a snowmobile, I can't remember) to some guys place. It was brand new and has been barely driven. He was really easy with it whenever he drove it. The guy that owns the machine let the guy who lives at the place where the guy went to drive his new machine. When he got on it, he drove the hell out of it. Hard acceleration and everything. When he gave it back, it wasn't damaged at all. It was running very nicely.
About changing oil, I hear it's best to change it after half a tank, then after that tank is empty. This ensures that the debris from the piston, etc do not "attack" anything.
