Drilling out bolt on a 2001 rancher
#1
Well i found out that the bolts on the right side of engine as your sitting on it are supost to be the same lenght. They are item # 17 if you look at a diagram of the cyclinder head. They go from the top of the head down to the crank case. My question is as follows: is the bolt holes in the crankcase blind or do they go all the way though. I want to drill out the broken bolt but dont want to tear the engine down to do it. If its blind then i can drill it out and vaccum out the metal particles. if they go though then i will have to pull engine apart and i dont know how hard that is to do?

Have you considered using a reverse drill type bolt remover? Not sure if this will help in your case but it's a backwards thread drill bit that is hardened and made to remove broken bolts and stripped head screws. You can get them at Sears. If it works it would be less hassle that trying to drill and tap.

As long as the bolt isn't frozen or really tight in the hole the backwards drill bit should work. You won't drill all the way through the bolt, as soon as the backwards drill bit bites into the bolt it should spin right out. If not you pobably will have to drill and re-tap the hole. How did the bolt break off? If it broke off by over tightening it then the reverse drill will probably work, but if it broke while trying to loosen it, it brobably won't. I hope this helps.
