Xplorer 250 grinding noise..
#1
Hey-
I'm not really that educated about ATV's, but i have a polaris xplorer 250. I recently got it registered, and am enjoying driving somewhere other than in my own woods. But recently the atv has been making a grinding noise. It sounds like its not in gear all the way, but even when i hold the shifter forward it still makes the noise. It is not constant, but usually occurs when i am accelerating or driving up a long incline. It is coming from somewhere inside the engine or transmission area, not from a hub or differential. Any suggestions as to what it might be would be appreciated. Thanks

I havent been able to pinpoint the noise- it isnt constant, and it never happens when im waiting for it of course. I havent done much rough driving, though. Just light trail riding over packed dirt and some light snow, and i use low on the big hills and deep snow.
When im riding, it feels like the noise is coming from right under the back of the seat; right under where im sitting. But there isnt much there on a 250, so i dunno. And i can feel it too, the atv kinda jerks a tiny bit, which makes me suspect a transmission prob. Its only two years old though, and like i said, no real off roading on it, just light trail riding...

Check the chain...it can make a grinding noise......could be way to tight..or loose...check the sprockets also....just a thought

Definitely check your chain. I have a 2001 xplorer 250 and the same thing happened on mine. The polaris chains seem to strech very easily and when your chain gets loose it makes a noise from hitting the sprocket wrong. Check your chain before every ride!
