97 500 polaris

My friend has just bought a .97 500 polaris sportsman and the speedomeater has guit. my guestion is where is the speed sinsor . I know that on a 700 it is on the right front wheel . but not sure where it is on a 500 when I looked at it it has a wire going to the front right wheel but it whent in to the shock or that is what it looked like . And is there any thing else that it could be I am not up to date on 500 but I have just had to replace one on my 700. any help wold be appreciated . also how hard is it to replace a boot on the front cv joint. if you can replace only the boot . it is the one closest to the wheel. thinks for the info

The speedo on the '97 is cable driven, cable comes off the LH side of the gearbox.
The CV boot can be replaced - here is a diagram of what it looks like: Early SP500 front CV - most of the time you can do these still attached to the gearbox, if you can get the CV to pop off the end of the shaft.
