What has been your experience? I want a new BAJA X. I have taken excellent care of mine. I just dont see me getting out of it what I want at a dealer on a trade in. So, what have all of you done in the past? What is my 02 BAJA worth anyway?

List of Mods:
Carb Mount Filter
Maxxis Razrs all around
WB Slip on
PRM Grab Bar
PRM Swing Arm skid plate
Alba Graphics kit w/seat cover
Super Cooler

The dealer can probably sell it for the same as you but he has to make a profit and take the chance it wont sell so he wont give you as much. This is pretty obvious.
However! When you trade it in you are done. Noone wanting to call you, or ride it, or bad checks.

Right now with all the dealer incentives it is really hard to get top dollar today

Depends on what you get for your trade in. Keep in mind that you need to pay sales tax on what you sell your ATV for. Or stated differently, if you get $5K for a trade in ATV, and pay $6K for the new ATV, you pay sales tax on $1K ($60). If you sell your ATV yourself and buy the new ATV outright, you have to pay sales tax on $6K ($360). So you need to sell your old ATV for $300 more than the dealer will give you for it to even break even. Add to that your time, advertising cost ($40 on ebay), etc., and it may be easier to just trade it in. Like I say, it depends on what you get for your trade in.

Matt,

If you sell it outright, you still get a tax credit. The tax credit is good for 180 days from the date you sell the Baja. It must be documented on a notarized bill of sale, which you must take to the license office when you pay the tax on the new vehicle. You would only have to pay sales tax on the difference between the sell price of the Baja and what you pay for the Baja X, just as Outerlimit's example showed.

Personally, I have not had good luck trying to sell my bikes. When I put my CBR 929 in the SI trader, a guy called me asking if it was as comfortable as a 600 Shadow. I was like, ugh, NO! Had a few other callers, but no takers. The Southeast Missourian classifieds were a joke too.

There is a dealer down here (Motorsports Unlimited) that sells bikes on consignment. You take them the bike with the title or a copy of the title and they'll try to sell it. Their charge has gone up to $275, I think, and that is kind of steep. That fee only applies if it sells.

You might be best off trying to sell it by displaying it along a major highway. Take it over to Jeremy's house and put it in the front yard. A lot of people drive by there and would see it. If you have any friends or family that live along 32 that would be great too. Just remember that when you advertise stuff that way, you could be inviting some negative attention also. I wouldn't want it to get stolen if you see what I'm saying.

I guess that is why the trade-in is so convenient. No wait, no hassling with selling outright, etc. Well, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Daren

Ive found that around my area the Bombardiers are a harder sale than most. It takes a certain type of person for a DS. I sold them for a dealership in Texas and it wasnt an easy sale. Big guys love them. I guess most people just dont understand how tough they are. I guess some hate the weight. We could sell Yamahas and Hondas 4 or 5 to 1 maybe more. Like I said the public just doesnt understand how good of a quad it really is. A dealerships not the way to go.

All good points guys. You almost had me convinced to load up my Eiger and trade er in on that 700 I've been wanting. I feel pretty comfortable with my dealer so I think thats where she'll go when its time to move up.
