Does anyone have a performance CDI? I was thinking about getting one for my Raptor, but i wasn't sure how effective they were, so i need some opinions. Also, i have heard of a performance Rectifier..... ARe those any good? ARe they worth the money?

A guy in the Honda forum's got a cdi (rectfier)off ebay his bike wouldn't start with it. Said it never came in any type of box, and had no logo's on it. Reminded him of the stock cdi. So watch for scam's.

 

Are they very easy to install? Do it yourself?

 

I have a question how do you now if you need a cdi or if it will help your atvs performance. I have a 04 raptor with pipe and jet kit and filter. Would it be worth it for me to get a cdi?

 

You just un-plug your stock cdi, and plug in the new cdi. Easy mod. Takes like 2 minutes to do it.


The Big Gun CDI claims to add 1-3HP depending on your mod's, and it gives your quad a new, more aggressive power curve. Usually you don't get a cdi unless you have built your motor. But it definetly seems to help the EX's around here that run the aftermarket cdi's.

 

Because they come with a low rev limiter from the factory, the same reason an aftermarket CDI helps DSs out so much.

 

No, for 350+ dollars there are other things you can do to increase performance. If you dont mind gettting into the engine, a stage 1 cam and 11:1 piston will wake the engine up for under 275 bucks. Other things to think of are suspension upgrades like new a arms, a new axle, new shocks, etc.

A raptor does not need a cdi until peak hp reaches or approaches 9k rpms. Even with a stage 2 cam you will barely break 8k.

 

Thanks for the reply maddog56 if i did go with the stage 1 or 2 cam with 11 to 1 piston would that cut my motor life especally in half? Would i need to get anything else if i did go with that set up.

 

Installing a cam and piston shouldnt significantly reduce any reliability or durablity issues with the raptor. stage 2 cams require new valve springs at a cost of about 130 bucks or so. Stage 2 cams are designed to make power at high rpms, which is great for drag racing, duning and the like. Stage 1 cams do not need the valve springs and keep the power and torque in the low and midrange where it is best for trails and playing around.

As far as the piston goes, an 11:1 will still run on pump gas, premium 93 octane. The compression shouldnt give you problems starting it or anything else for that matter. Any higher compression and you will need to run more expensive race gas but will potentially make more power.
