all of the polaris 400s are 2 stroke... through the years the chain drive system has been changed and maybe a few minor changes but other than that they are the same machine....

I prefer my SP400 over the wife's SP500 - I've always liked the bang you get out of the 2 stroke - besides it easier to work on. I've put a lot of Foreman 450's to shame in the mud with it too (of course it don't take much of anything to do THAT, now does it?? )

(PS - just playing Honda guys - not flaming - I own a Honda too)

There are a few small differences as the years go by.

After 98 they (Sports) got concentric drive system

After 2000( Scramblers) there was a brake pad update and 2" added rear suspension travel, Also FOX shock got a Reservoir not previously used on the Sports. (Like previous 4x4 Scrambler)
Also the heim style tie rods were added.

After 2001 they added steel braded brake lines, drilled brake rotor, and better brake reservoir & lever.
Also a bigger steering post and a sealed bearing support.

2002 had fewer grease points and a newer style Lifetime warrantly belt.

2003 they changed the name to (Trailblazer 400)

If you were to buy one I think the 2001 would be your best BASE buy if you are coinsidering options availables
