What's the deal on the in line filter. I've seen several posts, and at the end where you list what you own, I've noticed on the Rancher's ( I own one ), it says "in line filter" as an addition. I'm guessing this is a gas filter? If so, is it necessary? Jeff, 97 Recon, 00 Rancher ES 4x2.

Bose,
Good question. I hope you get an answer. Come on guys....What is it? Since it is not stock, which do you use? Where do you buy it? Where do you put it? Whats the advantage? I'll be doing my first service soon and will add it if it makes sense. Thanks.

I have an inline filter on both of my quads. I bought a volkswagon type filter for my 450ES. It is a clear plastic filter about 2.5 inches long. On my 400EX I have a Briggs and Stratton filter part number 5018. It is a red plastic pancake type filter.

You install it between the fuel tank and carb inlet. Just cut the fuel line and insert the filter and clamp it. I use black tie-wraps for clamps. I buy my filters at Wal-Mart, in the lawnmower section, about 2.00 each.

There isn't a lot of room on the 400EX, or I would have put the larger clear plastic filter on it too.
I think they are a good idea to have. Gasoline isn't clean. and I don't want to have to worry about trash getting in the needle and seat or main jet or idle circuit.

I have planned to put an inline fuel filter on my EX when I get around to it. Just that extra precaution that could save you some headache down the road. What if you were checking your gas at the dunes and some sand got in the tank? I wouldn't want that working it's way into my engine.

Look in the bottom of your gas can, not your tank. Do you see any black specks?

I use the clear plastic in line filters to keep those black flecks of "stuff" out of my quad.

You can them from any motorcycle shop. They run $2-3 each. The cool thing is you can see the "stuff" accumulate in the filter instead of your quad.

An ounce of prevention!
