300 trx 2wd vs. Recon
#1
I have the opportunity to purchase either a Honda 300 trx two wheel drive or a Recon. I like both ATV's. I like the 300 trx because of the low first gear, and the front end is heavier than the Recon and does not come off the ground as easy. I like the recon because of its small size, easy steering and peppy motor. My concern with the Recon is that the front end comes up too easy and it does not have a low first gear. I mainly will be doing recreational trail riding (80%) and light utility work (20%)including towing a light trailer up a small hill. The 300 trx 2wd that I have the opportunity to purchase is a 1994, but it is in excellent condition and the man wants $3000.00 firm. It has aluminum wheels and full floor boards as extras. For a few hundred more I can purchase a new Recon. I would appreciate any and all opinions. I already have a 4x4 so I want a 2wd around the size of a Recon or 300 trx.

Just my .02. If given the choice of these two bikes, I think I would definately take the Recon. It is new, and basicly the same price, after haggling with the dealer. The 300 is a great bike, but from what I hear, the Recon is BAAAAD for a 250.

Who says the Recon does not have a low first gear! I usually start out in 2nd gear because of the low first gear. The Recon is one awsome quad for a 250!!! It will climb any hill out there. ( well, almost any hill! ) Jeff, 00 Rancher ES 4x2, 97 Recon.

One more thing, you said you'll be doing 80% trail riding. The Recon is the most "agile" quad out there when it comes to riding tight trails, bar NONE!!!

You guys about have me talked into buying a Recon instead of the trx 300. Does anyone want to defend or argue for the trx 300. I have only heard good things about the Recon on the forum, but I personally don't know any Recon owners where I live. The owner of the trx 300 tells me that he owned a Recon but sold it because he felt the front end was too light and would fly up unexpectedly. I quite honestly don't know if this is true or not. Therefore, does the front end fly up unexpectedly when climbing hills or towing a trailer on the Recon, or is raising the front end off the ground an intentional task or has anyone had any problems with flipping the Recon while climbing a hill or towing a trailer? Your response to this will probably be the deciding factor.
I appreciate the opinions given so far!

You mentioned you owned a 4 X 4, why not use that for towing your trailer and get a sportier quad for trail riding. I’ll tell you what I think of the Recon in case there is a reason you don’t want a sportier quad (Warrior, 300ex, 400ex, etc.).
I don’t own a TRX300, but one of the quads I do own is a Recon and I like the machine. I needed a utility for things I can’t use my sport quad for, something with an automatic clutch so I would have one hand free. I was actually looking for something low cost when I purchased it and wondered how it would perform, but after I was around it for a while I decided it was all I needed in a quad with auto clutch. It’s mostly ridden in irrigated pasture and in the barnyard. I use it to carry a sprayer for controlling grass around buildings, fences and to control Blackberry vines. It’s also used while irrigating the pasture so it’s in some water and mud sometimes but nothing it wont handle.
It’s nice to have it around and is the spare quad for friends to ride who don’t own quads but want to come along. There is nothing wrong with the machine and has reasonable pep. I just prefer a clutch type when riding for fun because I used to ride dirt bikes.

the front end is controble and you can EASLY put it back down and only comes up when wanting it to it might come up if your heavy and you sit way back and when practicing wheelies i was standing the quad up on the back rack about 20 times a day
but that was my fault and it always just stood straight up on the back rack never came all the way over and the tires will start sping before the front end will flip over (i know i attempt climbing some pretty vertical hills)
